Position Title: Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator

Purpose
The Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator supports Wet’suwet’en First Nation’s Natural Resources Department by coordinating the intake, tracking, review, and response process for land and resource referrals within WFN Territory. The role maintains WFN’s referral records, coordinates deadlines and follow-up, supports mapping and information requests, and helps ensure referrals are reviewed through an organized, consistent, and accountable WFN process.
This position is a coordination role, not a final decision-making role. Significant matters, strategic positions, legal issues, accommodation matters, and final decisions will be escalated to the WFN Program Manager, Chief and Council, legal counsel, or other advisors as directed.
Primary Responsibilities
- Coordinate the receipt, tracking, triage, assignment, review, and follow-up of natural resource consultation and referral matters within WFN Territory.
- Maintain WFN’s referral tracking system, filing system, deadline calendar, contact lists, correspondence records, and supporting documents.
- Review incoming referrals for completeness, timelines, location, project type, potential impacts, and required next steps.
- Coordinate information requests, extension requests, referral summaries, draft response letters, meeting notes, and internal briefing materials.
- Work with WFN staff, consultants, advisors, legal counsel, Crown agencies, proponents, and community contacts to support timely and organized referral review.
- Prepare regular referral status updates for the WFN Program Manager and support reports to Chief and Council as directed.
- Coordinate Natural Resources referral meetings, including agendas, minutes, action items, follow-up tracking, and file status updates.
- Support the development and improvement of referral procedures, templates, workflows, and online referral or records management tools.
- Prepare basic maps and spatial information using GIS and web-based mapping tools for Natural Resources Department referrals and projects.
- Coordinate field visits, site visits, and information-gathering activities with the Referrals Technician, consultants, Crown agencies, proponents, and community representatives as directed.
- Support the collection, organization, and protection of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), land use information, and confidential WFN information in accordance with WFN protocols.
- Support capacity funding requests, referral workplans, budget tracking, and reporting related to referral review where directed.
- Provide day-to-day direction and coordination support to the Referrals Technician and other Natural Resources staff where assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure referral records and culturally sensitive information are handled appropriately.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned by the WFN Program Manager.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Completion of a post-secondary program related to natural resources, environmental studies, forestry, land administration, Indigenous governance, planning, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to WFN.
- Minimum 2-4 years of experience in natural resources, referrals, consultation, lands administration, project coordination, regulatory coordination, or a related field.
- Experience working with First Nations governments, Indigenous communities, Crown agencies, proponents, or consultants is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of referrals, consultation processes, Aboriginal Title and Rights, environmental assessment, forestry, mining, land use, or related natural resource matters is considered an asset.
- Strong writing, organization, deadline tracking, file management, and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, iPads, ArcGIS, and web-based mapping tools such as Google Earth.
- Ability to read maps, organize spatial information, and work with referral records and project documents.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines, and work respectfully as part of a team.
- Knowledge of Wet’suwet’en culture and traditions is an asset.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of Natural Resources Department and WFN matters.
- Physically able to participate in fieldwork and site visits when required.
