Topman Job Description

Job Summary

The Topman plays a critical role in water and sewer construction projects by supporting underground utility installation crews from above ground. This position is responsible for assisting with trench safety by always monitoring the slopes of the excavation, handling tools and materials, and ensuring efficient workflow and communication between crew members. The Topman ensures that all necessary equipment and supplies are readily available and assists in maintaining a safe and organized job site.

Key Responsibilities

· Always monitor the slopes of the trench. If the Topman needs to leave the edge of trench, another competent person must replace them.

· Support pipe crews by delivering tools, materials, and equipment to trench locations.

· Assist in setting up and maintaining trench boxes, shoring, and other protective systems.

· Communicate effectively with crew members to coordinate tasks and resolve issues.

· Maintain inventory of tools and materials and report shortages or damages.

· Keep the job site clean and organized, removing debris and hazards.

· Operate hand tools and light equipment as needed, specifically using a quickie saw and/or beveling tool to prepare pipe for installation

· Monitor elevation using a builder’s level and rod

· Document grade measurements and adjustments for project records.

· Assist with traffic control and site access management.

· Follow company policies and procedures for safety and operations.

Reporting Responsibilities

· Reports directly to the Foreman or Site Supervisor and collaborates closely with the Pipe Layer, equipment operators, and labourers to ensure project efficiency and safety.

· Effectively communicates field conditions, equipment issues, safety hazards, and other concerns to engineering and management teams.

· Submits daily logs, safety reports, and progress updates.

· Reviews and signs off on daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs.

· Promptly report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards, or unsafe conditions to the Supervisor.

· Completes and submits all required incident and near-miss documentation.

Qualifications

· Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices.

· Ability to read and interpret construction grade sheets

· Excellent communication and organizational skills.

· Valid driver’s license

· Experience with SiteDocs or similar reporting tools is an asset.

Physical Demands

· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and climbing on uneven terrain.

· Operation of heavy equipment and tools as needed, including frequent sitting and operating machinery for extended periods.

· Manual dexterity to control levers and foot pedals.

· Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.

· Ability to climb in and out of equipment safely and frequently.

Work Environment

· Work is performed outdoors on active construction sites, involving excavation, pipe installation, water and sewer installation, rehabilitation projects, and heavy machinery.

· Extended periods of physical activity during 8–12 hour shifts, with potential for overtime including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as required by project schedules.

· Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.

· Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
