Job Description

Job Summary: The Compliance Lead, Health Research oversees research compliance involving human subjects in clinical and laboratory settings at McMaster University. The role supports health compliance research with applicable regulatory, ethical, and institutional requirements through oversight of study compliance, audit readiness, and training activities. The position serves as an advisor to senior leadership and a key resource to the research community on regulatory and quality matters. Through collaboration with faculty members, administrative staff, researchers and research related units, the role supports compliant research conduct ensuring compliance with University, Provincial, Federal and International regulatory requirements while contributing to institutional success.

Purpose and Key Functions:

Oversee the health research operations and compliance portfolio at McMaster University aligned with institutional priorities and regulatory expectations.
Establish and maintain integrated compliance systems that align research operations with national and international regulatory frameworks.
Advise senior leadership on regulatory risks, compliance strategies, and research quality improvement initiatives.
Ensure institutional compliance with applicable non-financial regulations, guidelines, and standards, including those from regulatory and governing bodies.
Interpret evolving regulatory requirements and draft and recommend updates to institutional policies, procedures, and best practices.
Align university practices with current and emerging regulatory expectations at the federal and international levels.
Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies related to research compliance.
Design, implement, and oversee internal audit and monitoring programs for clinical studies and research studies.
Conduct internal audits as required to ensure compliance with protocols, regulations, and institutional policies.
Lead or coordinate external audits and monitoring activities as required.
Develop and manage Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plans following audits or inspections.
Ensure research data collection, storage, documentation, and reporting practices are maintained in accordance with protocols and standards.
Serve as an institutional contact for regulatory bodies and ethics organizations.
Lead preparation for regulatory inspections and ensure ongoing inspection readiness.
Coordinate responses to regulatory findings and oversee post-inspection follow-up activities.
Collaborate with external sponsors to establish and maintain quality expectations for research studies.
Develop, implement, and oversee compliance training programs for health research staff
Create and maintain training materials, manuals, and resources to support regulatory compliance and best practices.
Provide tailored education and guidance to Principal Investigators, research staff, and stakeholders regarding non-financial compliance.
Lead the development, implementation, and revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to compliance, ethics, and training.
Write and maintain updates to all non-financial research compliance documentation, guidelines, and processes meet regulatory and institutional standards.
Oversee study-related administrative compliance activities for clinical research.
Act as a key resource and consultant to the McMaster research community on regulatory and compliance matters.
Build and maintain strong relationships with Principal Investigators, research staff, sponsors, and institutional leadership.
Support cross-functional collaboration to ensure compliance is integrated across all research activities.
Provide expert input on special projects and initiatives within the research portfolio.
Remain current with chan ges to new and existing regulatory guidelines.

Supervision:

Occasionally provides orientation and shows procedures to others.
Provides functional guidance to others on an ongoing basis.
Ensures adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff (less than 12 months) and volunteers for events and activities (may includes staffing for short-term needs).

Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree. in a health, science, or related discipline.
Certificate in clinical research compliance is required.
