Full job description

Norpac Construction Incorporated is an independent geotechnical contractor operating across British Columbia and Alberta, specializing in slope stabilization and civil construction work. Projects are delivered in environments where terrain, access constraints, and delivery conditions require careful planning, technical expertise, and disciplined execution.

Founded in 2016, Norpac brings together a management team and workforce with more than 25 years of experience delivering slope stabilization, ground support, and related geotechnical solutions. Work is completed in close collaboration with clients to address site-specific conditions and project requirements.

Norpac provides end-to-end project support, including site assessment, solution development, design engineering where required, construction execution, and project close-out. Emphasis is placed on clear communication, coordination between field and office teams, and a team-based approach throughout the project lifecycle.

We are seeking a motivated and practical Geotechnical / Civil Field Engineer to support ongoing construction and geotechnical projects throughout Western Canada on a contract basis.

This is a field-based position requiring regular travel and extended periods on active construction sites. The successful candidate will report directly to the Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Design Build Services, and work closely with contractors, project managers, and clients to support the successful delivery of design-build and construction projects.

Project locations include Alberta and British Columbia, but may extend to other regions as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform on-site constructability reviews during construction activities.
Conduct field inspections and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) activities for geotechnical and civil works.
Coordinate and oversee testing and verification of geotechnical systems and installations.
Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings, and design intent.
Prepare field reports, inspection records, testing documentation, and daily summaries.
Communicate directly with clients, contractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
Identify field issues and assist in developing practical construction solutions.
Support project planning, execution, and close-out activities.
Participate in site meetings and provide technical support during construction.
Maintain a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Experience & Knowledge:

Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
Minimum 3 years of experience in construction oversight, field engineering, geotechnical inspection, or related work.
Working knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and construction practices.
Experience performing QA/QC inspections and preparing field documentation.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently in remote and active construction environments.
Valid driver's licence and ability to travel extensively throughout project locations.
Physically capable of working in challenging outdoor environments and accessing construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications would be considered assets:

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration or eligibility for registration.
Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation.
Experience with design-build project delivery.
Experience with: soil nails and ground anchors, rockfall protection systems, shotcrete applications, slope stabilization and geohazard mitigation, retaining structures, and earthworks and excavation support systems.
Ground Disturbance Level II certification.
CSTS, WHMIS, and First Aid certifications.
Fall Protection certification.
Rope Access certification (IRATA or SPRAT).
Experience working on transportation, mining, forestry, or infrastructure projects.
Experience working in mountainous or remote environments.

Work Environment:

Primarily field-based position with the majority of time spent on active construction sites.
Regular travel to project sites throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and other locations as required.
Frequent work on active construction sites and in remote environments.
Daily use of computers, engineering drawings, and digital project documentation.
Participation in site inspections, client meetings, and project coordination activities.
