Sous Chef / Chef de Cuisine

Oak; Catered Events | Kelowna, BC

Oak; Catered Events is a premium private event caterer serving Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. We create elevated dining experiences built around exceptional ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and refined presentation. From multi-course sunset dinners and terrace canapé receptions to vineyard weddings and corporate events, our work is centered on precision, consistency, and exceptional hospitality.

We are hiring 1–2 experienced culinary professionals to join our team as Sous Chef / Chef de Cuisine in anticipation of our busiest season to date. This is a senior kitchen role and a key position within the company, directly supporting the Culinary Director and playing a major role in execution, leadership, and overall event success.

This role is ideal for someone with strong culinary experience who is looking for meaningful responsibility, growth, and the opportunity to be part of a high-standard operation.

About the Role

The Sous Chef / Chef de Cuisine is responsible for maintaining Oak;’s culinary standards across both prep and event execution. This role requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under pressure.

You will be involved in all stages of production—from prep in our kitchen to on-site execution—and will be trained to independently lead events over time.

Key Responsibilities

Kitchen Prep & Production

Lead and execute prep in the 2–3 days leading up to events (typically Wednesday–Friday)
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and efficiency
Follow recipes and systems with precision while supporting custom-curated menus
Ensure consistency, quality, and readiness across all components

Event Execution

Execute on-site cooking, plating, and service at private and public venues
Prepare, cook, assemble, and plate a variety of dishes and canapés across different service styles
Maintain composure and standards in fast-paced, high-expectation environments
Assist with breakdown, cleaning, and resetting as needed

Leadership & Ownership

Support and guide prep and event cooks during production and service
Take increasing ownership of event execution, logistics, and flow
Over time, be capable of independently running events from:
Packing and loading
On-site setup and execution
Team coordination
Breakdown and kitchen reset

Logistics

Work between our Kelowna prep kitchen and event venues across the Okanagan
Travel to North and South Okanagan events when required (gas/travel compensation provided)

What We’re Looking For

Strong kitchen experience is required
Fine dining experience is highly preferred
Catering experience is a strong asset
Culinary school training is an asset
Valid FoodSafe certificate
Reliable transportation to and from events
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to lead, communicate clearly, and stay composed under pressure
A genuine pride in quality, consistency, and execution

Schedule Expectations

Availability typically Wednesday through Saturday
Prep shifts: mornings / early afternoons (Wed–Fri)
Event days: Fridays / Saturdays, typically afternoons into evening

Compensation & Additional Information

Starting wages varying, with performance-based increases up to $30+/hour following a trial period
Additional growth opportunities based on performance and responsibility
Tips are shared equally among staff based on hours worked at each event
Travel compensation provided for out-of-area events
Referral bonuses available
This role required an averaging agreement (details available upon request)
Direct mentorship and training from the Culinary Director
