Job Details:
Position Title: Indigenous Student Advisor
Status: Full Time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Faculty/Department: Indigenous Education and Engagement
Campus/Location: North Campus (In Person), with regular travel to Lakeshore Campus as required to support Indigenous student services, programming, and team collaboration across both sites.
Salary Range: FT Support Payband H (Start $37.34 - Max $43.18)
Starting Salary: $37.34
Progression through the payband is in accordance with the increments in the payband as outline in the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement based on actual service in the payband.
About the Indigenous Education & Engagement Department at Humber:
Indigenous Education & Engagement (IE&E) works in partnership with regional Indigenous communities to ensure Indigenous students are supported and connected to their learning environment- academically, culturally and socially. IE&E is committed to braiding Indigenous Ways of Being, Knowing, and Doing into Humber’s academic programs, course content and co-curricular activities.
About the Role:
Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Education & Engagement, the Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) is a proactive and collaborative team member dedicated to supporting Indigenous students and alumni through academic and career advising. From admission through graduation and beyond, the ISA empowers students to recognize and apply their unique gifts, skills, and strengths, while connecting them to resources and expertise that foster academic success.
The ISA provides culturally informed advising, drawing on knowledge of Indigenous diversity and nuance, institutional policies, systems, regulations, and guidelines. They offer guidance to students facing financial challenges, registration issues, program changes, or academic difficulties, tailoring support to each student’s context and needs.
As part of a broader network of advising and service professionals, the ISA contributes to Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber’s exceptional learning environment. They play a leadership role in designing, delivering, and evaluating Indigenous Student Success events, programs, and initiatives, and provide strategic recommendations to enhance institutional service standards. The ISA works closely with faculties and service areas to identify and address systemic issues, coordinate case conferencing, make meaningful referrals, and deliver training sessions that enhance the quality of advising for Indigenous students.

Education
Minimum 4-year degree in a relevant field of study, e.g., HR, Psychology, Education, Sociology, Social Work, Career and Work Counsellor Programs.
A certificate in academic advising and/or career coaching is considered an asset. Relevant certifications may be obtained through, but are not limited to, organizations and institutions such as NACADA, CACEE, CERIC, NACE, Conestoga College, Fanshawe College, or the University of Calgary.
Experience/Skills
A minimum of 3 years of experience in a advising role or a student service role with advising responsibility, ideally inclusive of direct experience working with Indigenous students, families and communities.
Awareness of and sensitivity to the issues Indigenous students face in relation to access, transition and retention from urban and rural environments to PSE.
Demonstrated strategic-planning proficiency, with evidence of critical-thinking and analytical skills to enable the assessment of opportunities, the development of advising initiatives, and direct engagement with students.
Demonstrated ability to think on the spot, improvise, solve problems, and make effective decisions independently.
Ability to speak credibly about all aspects of postsecondary education, including recruitment and admissions, Canadian and international education systems, transition issues, academic programs, financing, residence, student life, and success after graduation.
Proven degree of maturity, confidence, and competence sufficient to effectively represent Humber/Guelph Humber at events and on interdepartmental/interinstitutional/community-based committees.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced environment characterized by changing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to thrive in and contribute to an integrated and collaborative team environment and to apply a positive team approach, build consensus, and lead integrated project teams.
Flexibility, diplomacy, sound judgment, and relations-management skills coupled with the ability to influence and motivate others and to manage crisis situations effectively.
Use of CRM or client management system, collecting and maintaining a database, utilizing social media platforms for marketing and recruitment.
