Course Information

This course introduces students to the philosophy, pedagogy, and assessment of music education. Students will learn how to confidently lead activities involving music and how to incorporate music into their classes, while developing their own musicianship skills through singing and playing musical instruments: creating and performing; reflecting, responding, and analysing; and exploring forms and cultural contexts of music.

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Curriculum and Pedagogy in Elementary Music. The course is intended to build both the pedagogical and musical confidence of teacher candidates, many of whom may not have a formal background in music. The successful candidate will model inclusive music teaching practices and help teacher candidates explore how to teach and integrate music into their future classrooms.

Design and deliver engaging, hands-on instruction grounded in the Ontario Arts Curriculum (Grades 1–8).
Guide teacher candidates in developing music lesson plans and assessment strategies.
Introduce a range of accessible musical tools, resources, and approaches appropriate for elementary learners.
Support candidates in exploring singing, movement, and classroom instruments regardless of musical background.
Foster an inclusive classroom environment that emphasizes cultural relevance and musical equity.
Provide feedback on candidates’ teaching, musical competency, reflections, and instructional planning.
Engage teacher candidates in reflective practice to consider their roles as educators in fostering inclusive, ethical, and culturally responsive classrooms.
Collaborate with course team or administration to ensure alignment with B.Ed. program goals and standards.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Music Education, Music, Curriculum Studies, or a closely related field.
Familiarity with Ontario Arts Curriculum (Grades 1-8) and demonstrated experience and success teaching Music at the Primary, Junior, and/or Intermediate level; and/or in studio or community contexts.
Experience teaching or designing integrated arts/cross-curricular arts activities.
Knowledge of assessment & evaluation, differentiated instruction, and inclusive arts education practices in the elementary Music classroom.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or within the last five years.
OCT Specialist Qualification in Music or equivalent academic/professional expertise.
Collaborative experience with multi-disciplinary arts teams.
A record of effective teaching performance in post-secondary education (particularly teacher education), and/or Additional Qualifications (AQ courses), and/or facilitating teacher professional learning (e.g., through arts professional associations).
Active in research related to arts education.
