Summer Student Events Assistant – Immediate Opportunity
Youth Assisting Youth (YAY) is seeking enthusiastic and committed college or university students to join our team this summer! As a Summer Events Assistant, you will help deliver fun, inclusive, and engaging recreational activities, programs and events for underserved children and youth across Toronto and York Region. This is a rewarding opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in event planning, youth engagement and nonprofit operations, while making a real difference in young lives.
Summer Events Assistant Responsibilities:
- Support the Events Coordinator in planning, promoting, and delivering summer events and recreational activities that are well-organized and delivered effectively
- Facilitate programs, activities and events, including sports, arts & crafts, games and workshops.
- Communicate with youth volunteers and families by phone and email to coordinate event participation and registration.
- Assist with event setup and takedown, including physical activity and lifting items up to 30–50 lbs. (e.g., bottled water cases).
- Be available to participate in all key summer events, including the Annual Picnic on June 27, 2026.
- Other duties as assigned
Eligibility Criteria:
This position is funded through the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age on the start date of the job
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person granted refugee status in Canada
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Proven experience in planning events and working with children or youth in recreational, mentoring, event or community settings, including outdoor activities like summer camps, sports events, arts and crafts, etc.
- Ability to supervise volunteers
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through and complete tasks with minimal supervision
- Comfortable with regular physical activity, including safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30–50 lbs. (e.g., bottled water), especially during high-demand summer events
- Creative, enthusiastic and dependable, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work evenings and occasional weekends
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and social media tools
- Cleared Police Vulnerable Sector Check (or willing to obtain upon hiring).
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certificate
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are assets (not mandatory)
Contract Dates: This is a full-time contract position for 8 weeks at a wage of $18.60 per hour. This position includes evening and occasional weekend work, and requires availability for all YAY events, including Picnic.
The YAY office is conveniently accessible by TTC, located adjacent to the Yonge–Finch subway station and across from the Finch GO Bus Terminal.
