REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE

Title of Position: Registered Practical Nurse

Number of Positions: Two (2)

Hours: 75 hours biweekly

Job Duties: The duties of this position include:

· Assessing residents’ conditions using interviewing and observational skills, recording changes in health status and reporting to the Registered Nurse (RN);

· Reporting to and referring assessments to the RN when the residents’ care needs are beyond the RPN’s scope of competence;

· Contributing to the residents’ plan of care – setting goals and determining interventions in collaboration with the RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team;

· Implementing care by safely performing those tasks determined by the care plan in accordance with Home policy and procedures;

· Administering prescribed medications orally, topically, through natural body orifices, and administering insulin by subcutaneous injection using Novolin-Pen or equivalent;

· Assigning and supervising unregulated care providers who have been delegated care responsibilities by RNs, in accordance with College of Nurses standards;

· Providing wound care using aseptic technique;

· Evaluating the effectiveness of care provided and participating in care plan modification by the team;

· Maintaining records of care provided according to the Home’s policy and procedure;

· Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for residents and staff by adhering to infection control principles, Health and Safety, and Emergency policies and procedures of Belvedere and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and performing competently during emergencies; and

· Identifying both care delivery and system issues.

Skills Requirements:

· 2 years to less than 3 years experience working as a Registered Practical Nurse in a Long-Term Care setting;

· Completion of a vocational, college or other approved program for licensed practical nurses is required;

· Possession of a current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses as a Registered Practical Nurse;

· Experience in the assessment and provision of wound care in a Long-Term Care setting;

· Experience administering medication in a Long-Term Care setting;

· Experience applying the principles of assigning and supervising unregulated care providers in a Long-Term Care setting;

· Experience with preparing and maintaining health record documentation for residents;

· Knowledge of the scope of practice model of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA);

· Ability to assess and determine personal limits of practice in any situation, considering the overall care requirements of the resident, and the circumstances; and

· Knowledge of lifting and transferring techniques.

Terms of Employment: Full-Time, Permanent

Language of Work: English. Written and spoken English language skills are required.

Wage: The current wage range is: CA$26.89 - CA$28.49 per hour . The wage is as per the applicable Collective Agreement and is commensurate with experience. The wage range is subject to change in line with the applicable Collective Agreement.
