Location: Community Impact Centre, Red Deer
Project Number: 021411913
Position Type: Seasonal Employment (Canada Summer Job)
Duration: June to August 2026 (8 weeks)
Schedule: Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (35 hours per week)
Hourly Rate: $20.00
Reporting to: Food Services Manager
Number of Positions to Fill: 1
RFR#: 2031

Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Food Service Helper, as part of a team, provides support to the operation of the kitchen and food/beverage counter at The Mustard Seed, by assisting with sorting and organizing food donations, food preparation and cleaning activities. Maintaining Occupational Health & Safety Standards is also a key part of this role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sort and organize of food donations
Assist with packaging assorted pastries, baked items and other food as required
Assist with serving guests snacks, beverages, coffee, and warming sandwiches
Perform food preparation: peeling potatoes, carrots and chopping vegetables
Assist with bagging items for various programs such as School Lunch Program, Food Depot, Men’s Kitchen and other food programming.
Ensure pantry, coolers, freezers, and fridges are kept clean and organized
Wash and store dishes
Clean and keep kitchen organized
Work alongside and assist with volunteers as required
Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
Participate in all required training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Experience working in a kitchen environment is considered an asset
Food safety certification is considered a strong asset
Customer service experience
Must be able to handle a knife and have basic kitchen skills (operating oven, dishwasher, other appliances)
Good organizational skills
Good problem-solving and quick decision-making skills; ability to think “on-your-feet”
Ability to recognize and maintain appropriate boundaries with co-workers, volunteers and guests
High level of confidentiality, especially pertaining to guests’ information
Willingness to participate in any essential training required by The Mustard Seed
Desire to serve in a Christian ministry

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADA SUMMER JOBS

Be between 18 and 30 years of age
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Not a member of the Immediate Family of the Employer or a member of the Immediate Family of an officer or director of the Employer

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hands-on, fast-paced, active position requiring moderate to significant physical effort: lifting up to 25lbs, standing for duration of shift, bending, pushing, or pulling carts
Position requires moderate to significant mental effort
Position involves working closely with volunteers and staff
Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures/work environment required
Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive

- Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments
