ROLE: Safety Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

LOCATION: Saskatoon, SK

As our Safety Specialist for our Transportation Division, you’ll be at the heart of our operation, shaping how safety shows up every day for drivers, leaders, and frontline teams. This role combines field presence, regulatory expertise, and relationship‑building. You’ll be a trusted advisor, coach, and partner, leading safety initiatives that keep our fleet compliant, our drivers confident, and our operations moving safely forward.

As the organization continues to grow, you’ll play a key role in evolving and strengthening our safety culture across the Transportation Division.

You have advanced knowledge of MS office 365 applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams
You have extensive regulatory knowledge of NSC, DOT, OSHA
You are very organized and professional

EXPERIENCE

3–7 years of experience in transportation safety, fleet safety, or a related heavy‑industry role
Strong working knowledge of commercial trucking operations and driver compliance
Hands‑on experience with NSC standards and regulatory requirements
Strong communication skills, comfortable writing reports and leading conversations
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
Ability to analyze data, identify risks, and translate findings into action

NICE-TO-HAVE

NSC audit or fleet safety experience
Experience with ELD or telematics platforms (e.g., Motive, Intelex)
First Aid Level 1 or higher

THINGS YOU WILL DO…

Work closely with employees, management, and external stakeholders to mitigate risks and protect the well-being of the workforce.
Lead Safety Committees and program for all locations
Maintenance and organization of safety related records

OTHER …

Occasional overtime to support audits, investigations, or training
Travel to operational sites as part of staying connected to the field: Minimum 4 visits to Manitoba per year

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Lead Fleet & Regulatory Safety

Own compliance with National Safety Code (NSC) and applicable provincial and federal regulations
Audit driver qualification files, hours of service, ELD records, and supporting documentation
Keep policies, procedures, and NSC manuals current and audit‑ready
Act as a key partner during inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews

Prevent Incidents & Drive Improvement

Conduct safety inspections, field observations, and risk assessments across terminals
Lead investigations into collisions, injuries, and near‑misses, digging into root causes, not just symptoms
Analyze trends and recommend practical, effective corrective actions
Work with leaders to turn learnings into prevention strategies

Engage & Support Drivers

Build strong, trust‑based relationships with drivers and frontline teams
Lead safety committees and safety meetings across locations
Deliver engaging onboarding, coaching, and refresher training
Serve as a visible champion for safe driving behaviours and PPE use

Training & Emergency Readiness

Coordinate and deliver training in:
- Defensive driving and safe work practices
- Incident reporting and response
- Emergency preparedness and response
Maintain emergency response plans for fires, spills, weather events, and other incidents

Systems, Technology & Reporting

Maintain accurate records for inspections, incidents, audits, and corrective actions
Monitor safety metrics and prepare clear, actionable reports for leadership
Administer fleet safety technology (e.g., Motive) and follow up on trends and alerts
Partner with Transportation leadership on continuous improvement initiatives
