Your Opportunity:

The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Alberta’s busiest tertiary hospital, is seeking a dedicated Therapy Assistant for Recreation to join our Inpatient Acute Care team. RAH serves over 500,000 patients annually across one-third of Canada’s landmass and is home to specialized programs including Level 2 Trauma/ICU, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Stroke, Cardiac Care, and the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. Our Rehabilitation Department is an integral part of the exceptional care delivered at the RAH. Therapy Assistants at the Royal Alexandra Hospital play a meaningful role in supporting patients’ recovery and well-being through engaging, personalized activities. As part of a large, inner-city hospital, you’ll work with a diverse patient population and gain exposure to a wide range of medical cases, offering unique challenges and continuous opportunities to learn and grow. You’ll collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver programs that promote emotional, cognitive, and social health, helping patients maintain their identity and independence during hospitalization. Description:

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant diploma/certification/degree from a recognized post-secondary institution; Heart and stroke CPR (BCLS-HCP) certification; Experience working successfully as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team; Conflict resolution and strong communication skills; An excellent attendance record, reliability and personal suitability must be demonstrated through your employment references; Knowledge and ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook; Experience with Connect Care; Work tasks and charting is computer based so there are extensive repetitive motion tasks. Must be able to tolerate long periods of sitting or standing as well as repetitive movements; Must be able to participate in hands on care of patients (i.e. transfers, bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances); Physically capable of pushing wheelchairs for an extended period of time and distance; Must be able to lift and carry 10-15 kg regularly if needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year or more of recent experience working in an adult in-patient acute care setting; 1 year or more of experience working in a Therapeutic Recreation position with seniors and/or individuals with challenges; Experience assisting in mobilizing and transferring patients.
