The base salary will be $82,230 - $117,360 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

About Us

The mission of the Office of Faculty Relations is to maximize the University’s ability to achieve excellence in teaching, research and service by providing quality advice and support on employment matters in a manner that facilitates positive relationships with and among faculty, librarians, archivists, their representatives, university administrators, and the community.

Responsibilities

The Faculty Relations Consultant (Labour Relations) will support Western's and the Office of Faculty Relations’ missions by providing expert, informed advice to academic and administrative leaders within the faculties on matters relating to the employment of faculty, librarians and archivists. Using highly evolved problem-solving skills, conflict management and negotiation skills, the role will facilitate the resolution of labour and employment issues with employees, leaders and unions/association representatives.

The role collaborates with leaders and partners to design and deliver programs, resources and tools that enhance leadership and administrative skill relating to faculty employment processes. The Consultant reviews and approves faculty actions and ensures efficient and effective business process in supporting the administration of, and compliance with, collective agreements and policy.

The successful candidate will have an Undergraduate Degree in Human Resources or Law, with additional education related to Labour Relations. They have 5 years’ experience as a Human Resources or Labour Relations Consultant, with experience in negotiation, grievance management, and appointment administration in a large, unionized organization.

Qualifications

Education:

Undergraduate degree in Law or Human Resources, with additional formal education related to labour relations
Graduate degree in Industrial Relations; Canadian Human Resources Professional Designation (CHRP) preferred

Experience:

5 years’ experience as a human resources or labour relations consultant with experience in negotiation and grievance management in a large unionized organization
Experience in an academic or professional environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of current legislation and jurisprudence applicable in employer/employee and unionized relationships
Knowledge of best practices in human resources management, including recruitment and retention, training and development, performance management, disability management, organizational development, change management, conflict resolution, and labour relations
Excellent interpersonal skills which exhibit diplomacy and tact and which support the development of positive relationships even in an environment of stress and/or conflict
Excellent demonstrated communications skills (verbal and written, individual and group) which support persuasive advocacy and clarity of message in a comprehensive and concise manner
Strict adherence to the principles of confidentiality
Ability to apply the required knowledge and understanding of human resources practice in an academic environment to effectively support and advise a variety of stakeholders, with varying levels of knowledge and skill
Proven strong judgment, negotiation and problem solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
Ability to think and act strategically and to understand and manage the issues in the context of the mission, vision, values and objectives of the Office of Faculty Relations and the wider University
Strong organizational skills including, but not limited to file management, timeline management, and team leadership and support
Expertise in policy development, investigation/research and report preparation for multiple audiences
Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Ability to be proactive and take initiative with a strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
Ability to take on leadership roles and manage high functioning teams including, but not limited to: Joint Committee, OFR Project Teams, ALSC Steering Group and other committees as required
Possesses a demonstrated reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
Familiarity with collective agreements, letters and memoranda of understanding, conditions of appointment, policies and procedures for the client groups serviced by the Office of Faculty Relations preferred
Knowledge of the University, its structure, academic programs and regulations preferred
