Job Description:

Department Overview

The Underwriting Department at TD Insurance is a dynamic, high-energy team dedicated to protecting our customers and supporting the bank’s mission. We assess the mortality and morbidity risk of both TD Life's Individual Insurance products and for the Bank's Creditor Insurance program.

As a Bilingual Medical Underwriter, you’ll gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, working closely with supportive colleagues and industry experts. We’re committed to your growth, offering mentorship, ongoing training, and opportunities to pursue professional designations.

If you’re eager to learn, ready to make a difference, and want to build a rewarding career in insurance, we invite you to join our inclusive and innovative team. This position requires a minimum of 2+ years underwriting experience and/or a degree/diploma in health sciences.

Job Description

Review, assess, analyze, and evaluate detailed medical and non-medical risks, determine mortality ratings and make substantiated logical final decisions.

Appropriate medical underwriting assessment and decisions for each risk according to the limits of the plan and underwriting philosophy meeting business guidelines and service standards.

Communicate/negotiate with reinsurers for final decisions and applicable ratings.

Provide support to the claims department and handling claim referrals

Communicate underwriting decisions and detailed explanations of adverse handlings promptly and accurately to clients and, where required to attending physicians.

Ensure applications are underwritten and processed according to TD’s underwriting guidelines as well as the terms of the third party agreements

Developing and maintain excellent working relationships with other TD Insurance departments, bank departments and reinsurers.

Monitor and maintain service and production standards set for the department assisting own team members in meeting these departmental standards/goals.

Participate in continuing education and self-development courses to remain current in medical advancements and trends

Job Requirements

Specific Education:

Minimum of 2+ years insurance underwriting and/or a degree/diploma in Health Sciences or other medical background

Must have: Written and verbal proficiency in ENG/FR

Nice to have: Working toward license desired AALU ALMI designations, Industry related courses and/or accreditations (LOMA/ALU), or willing to begin working toward these license designations

Other Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Familiarity with underwriting function and eagerness to quickly build sound understanding of functions and company's various business operations.

Participate in continuing education and self-development courses to remain current in medical advancements and trends.

Superior verbal and written communication skills

Outstanding Customer Skills

Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills

Excellent computer skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
