ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Electrical Design Specialist will play a key role in the design, implementation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization of petroleum terminal projects across Canada and the United States. This position requires strong expertise in industrial electrical power distribution, low-voltage system design, motor control, hazardous area installations, instrumentation interfaces, automation systems, and field construction support.
The successful candidate will support both new terminal development and upgrades to existing facilities, ensuring electrical systems are designed, installed, and commissioned in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. This includes detailed involvement in load studies, cable sizing, transformer sizing, motor sizing, protection philosophy, grounding/earthing, heat tracing, control panels, PLC/HMI integration, and communication networks.
In addition, this role will contribute to strategic technical decision-making, provide engineering input into capital planning, and support business development teams by developing preliminary electrical concepts, scope definitions, and cost estimates for new terminal opportunities.
This position is critical to achieving Greenergy Canada’s business plan of adding multiple terminals per year, while also supporting infrastructure improvements, reliability enhancements, and troubleshooting activities in current operations.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
Electrical Engineering Design
- Develop and review single line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, termination drawings, loop drawings, panel layouts, and cable schedules.
- Perform electrical load calculations and develop distribution philosophies for terminal facilities, including MCCs, panels, transformers, motor circuits, UPS systems, and ancillary loads.
- Perform low-voltage power design and calculations, including voltage drop, short-circuit contribution review, feeder sizing, breaker sizing, coordination inputs, and equipment selection.
- Perform cable sizing for power, control, instrumentation, heat tracing, fibre optic, and communication systems.
- Perform motor sizing and motor circuit design for pumps, fans, compressors, loading arms, vapor control systems, and related terminal equipment.
- Perform transformer sizing and evaluate transformer loading, redundancy, system growth, and future capacity requirements.
- Support specification and review of VFDs, soft starters, MCC buckets, safety relays, PLC panels, marshalling panels, JB layouts, and local control stations.
- Support the design and application of electrical heat tracing systems, including load determination, circuit design, and temperature control philosophy.
- Develop and review primary and secondary earthing/grounding systems, bonding layouts, and lightning protection concepts where required.
- Maintain working knowledge of cathodic protection systems and ensure proper coordination between electrical design and corrosion protection requirements.
Automation, Controls & Network Integration
- Support design and integration of PLC, HMI, and control system architecture for terminal facilities.
- Coordinate electrical interfaces with instrumentation, tank gauging, fire & gas, ESD systems, and packaged skids.
- Review and support implementation of serial communication and industrial network architecture, including Ethernet, fibre optic, Modbus, and other communication protocols.
- Assist with electrical and controls integration for metering skids, transloaders, flame detectors, pump skids, truck/rail loading systems, and vapor control systems.
- Review automation-related vendor packages to ensure consistency with project design philosophy and terminal operating requirements.
Hazardous Area, Compliance & Safety
- Apply and review hazardous area classification requirements for petroleum terminal installations.
- Ensure electrical designs comply with applicable CSA, ESA, TSSA, ATEX, and other relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in HAZOP, PHA, constructability reviews, and design safety reviews with particular attention to electrical isolation, interlocks, ignition risks, and emergency shutdown interfaces.
- Support the development and review of electrical installation standards, inspection requirements, and commissioning procedures for hazardous locations.
- Review field installations for compliance with applicable area classification, grounding, sealing, cable entry, and equipment certification requirements.
Project Execution & Delivery
- Support development of project specifications, scope of work and supply, design criteria, datasheets, and technical bid evaluations for electrical and automation packages.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, procurement, construction teams, and external engineering firms to ensure practical and compliant design execution.
- Review and approve vendor drawings, electrical datasheets, control narratives, cause-and-effect charts, FAT/SAT documentation, and installation packages.
- Prepare and review cost estimates, project schedules, and risk register inputs related to electrical scope.
- Provide field engineering support during construction, installation, commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting.
- Support contractor oversight and installation review for cable pulling, terminations, earthing, transformer installation, panel installation, heat tracing, motor connections, and commissioning activities.
- Support operator training, turnover documentation, and as-built updates.
Testing, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
- Develop and review electrical commissioning procedures and inspection checklists.
- Participate in or oversee field testing including:
- - insulation resistance testing (megger test)
- - dielectric withstand testing (hipot test)
- - continuity testing
- - earth testing / grounding system testing
- - grounding/earthing verification
- - loop checks
- - motor rotation checks
- - VFD commissioning
- functional testing of interlocks, permissives, and safety relays
- Support troubleshooting of power distribution, PLC/HMI integration, field devices, communication failures, grounding issues, and equipment reliability problems in operating terminals.
- Support investigation of failures and develop practical corrective actions to improve reliability and maintainability.
SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada or eligibility for registration.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in electrical design and project execution within the oil & gas, petrochemical, bulk storage, terminal, industrial, or related sectors.
- Strong experience in low-voltage power distribution, motor control, transformers, cable sizing, and industrial electrical systems.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical installation/construction support, field commissioning, and field troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of hazardous area electrical design and installation requirements.
- Familiarity with PLC/HMI systems, industrial communications, and control system integration.
- Familiarity with project execution from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning.
- Knowledge of project management methodologies (PMBOK or equivalent) is an asset.
- Experience in cost estimation and capital planning for terminal, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
- Ability to engage with regulators, contractors, vendors, and client representatives.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% across Canada and the United States.
- French language ability considered an asset for cross-Canadian projects.

- PLC/HMI platforms: Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or equivalent
- Industrial networks: Ethernet, fibre optic, Modbus, managed switches, serial communication architectures
- Project management & collaboration: MS Project, Primavera P6, SharePoint, and other project tracking tools
