Overnight-Focused On-Call Relief Worker

Laren Society – Bill Mudge Residence
Victoria, British Columbia

About Us

Laren Society operates the Bill Mudge Residence, a 17-bed Community Residential Facility contracted with the Correctional Service of Canada. We provide a safe, supportive, and structured residential environment for men who have been granted conditional release by the Parole Board of Canada.

The Position

We are seeking a dependable and compassionate On-Call Relief Worker whose primary role will be covering overnight shifts.

Although morning and evening shifts will occasionally be available, this position is specifically intended for someone who is ready, willing, and regularly available to work overnight shifts as their main assignment.

Regular overnight availability is an essential requirement of this position. Applicants who are primarily seeking daytime or evening work may not be suitable for this particular role.

Candidates must also be able to provide reasonable availability during the summer months and holidays. The number and type of shifts may vary from month to month.

This opportunity may be particularly suitable for:

Someone wishing to supplement income from another job
A semi-retired person
A student or recent graduate seeking experience in the field
Someone interested in pursuing a career in corrections, social services, mental health, or addictions

During quieter periods, students may have some flexibility to work on school assignments, provided all employment responsibilities have been completed and the safety and needs of residents remain the priority.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

Primarily provide overnight supervision and support within the residence
Be available to provide occasional morning and evening relief coverage
Supervise residents living in the facility
Support men who have been granted conditional release
Help maintain a safe, respectful, and structured residential environment
Respond appropriately to resident needs and facility concerns
Complete required documentation and communicate relevant information to staff and management
Follow organizational policies, procedures, and professional boundaries

Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with a diploma or degree in a related field, including:

Criminology
Sociology
Social work or community support
Mental health and addictions
Psychology
Correctional or justice studies

Relevant education, employment, volunteer, or lived experience will also be considered.

The ideal applicant will be dependable, professional, supportive, and comfortable working independently overnight with individuals experiencing mental-health, addiction, and community-reintegration challenges.

This position provides valuable experience combining elements of criminology, sociology, mental-health support, addictions work, and community corrections.
