Men’s Fresh Start Group Counsellor & Youth Prevention Navigator (1 year Contract)

Hiatus House is looking for a Men’s Fresh Start Group Counsellor & Youth Prevention Navigator to join our growing team.

Hiatus House is a long-standing organization in Windsor Ontario, empowering individuals experiencing intimate partner violence, family violence, and human trafficking to find a new way of living. We offer many services and programs; 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, transitional housing support, programs for men who are ready to take responsibility for abusive behaviour, violence prevention, counselling and more.

The Role

The Men’s Fresh Start Group Counsellor & Youth Prevention Navigator will provide trauma informed, therapeutic and psycho-educational counselling and skill building for men and youth who have perpetrated past or present intimate partner violence, as well as those who are victims of abuse. Within this position, the Counsellor will support prevention, early intervention, mentorship, and navigation for boys, youth and men through existing youth-focused initiatives, including Coaching Boys into Men, Caring Dads, healthy masculinity programming, school and community-based prevention activities, and youth engagement partnerships.

The Men’s Fresh Start Group Counseller & Youth Prevention Navigator will provide support to male youth staying in shelter and young men accessing community-based youth services, including those seeking support related to dating violence, healthy relationships, exposure to violence, gender-based violence prevention, and early connection to appropriate supports.

Responsibilities:

To provide intake assessment, group counselling, individual support, crisis intervention, referrals, and client-centered services for men who have engaged in intimate partner violence and men who are victims of intimate partner violence.
To facilitate and/or co-facilitate the Fresh Start Men’s Program and Caring Dads program in accordance with program expectations and manuals.
To support prevention, early intervention, mentorship, and navigation for boys and young men through existing youth-focused initiatives, including Coaching Boys into Men, healthy masculinity programming, school and community-based prevention activities, and youth engagement partnerships.
To provide support to male youth staying in shelter and young men accessing community-based youth services, including those seeking support related to dating violence, healthy relationships, exposure to violence, gender-based violence prevention, and early connection to appropriate supports.

Minimum Requirements:

· B.S.W., R.S.W., Child and Youth Worker diploma, Social Service Worker diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· R.S.W. preferred.

· Experience including intake assessment, counselling, youth engagement, prevention programming, or related work.

· Experience with group facilitation and psycho-educational programming.

Additional Skills:

· A passion for reducing intimate partner violence through working with men to assist in changing patterns of abusive behaviour towards their partners

· Demonstrated social work clinical assessment, intervention skills and group treatment skills

· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with excellent oral and written communication skills

· Working knowledge of community resources and referral pathways.

· Knowledge of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, family violence, gender-based violence, and the impacts of violence on children and youth.

· Knowledge of child and youth development, healthy relationships, dating violence prevention, and the needs of boys and young men.

· Demonstrated ability to work with men and boys using a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, strengths-based, and accountability-focused approach.

· Understanding and adherence to strict confidentiality of the agency's programs.

· Requires ongoing communication skills (verbal/written) both internal, to the agency, and external, within the community.

· Ability to work collaboratively with agency staff, schools, youth-serving organizations, and community partners.

· Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings, to support group facilitation, youth outreach, and community-based programming.

· Ability to communicate professionally, both written and oral.

· Proficiency in other languages is preferred.
