Work culture depends heavily on the store you are in. I've worked multiple and have had a very different experience at each. It is minimum wage yet you are expected to give perfect customer service while often under staffed. Hours are not guaranteed unless you are management. There is issues with consistency between stores, as a younger staff member I often felt I was treated as a work horse for heavy lifting and would get sneared at when I would request I change jobs either because my back or shoulder were acting up or my medication or anemia were making me extremely light headed and dizzy. I also felt my opinions rarely meant anything despite head office constantly asking for things they could change or do better. 99% of the time they would be dismissed with something a long the lines of "we don't do it that way". Or they would change things for the better for only a month or two before reverting back to the way everyone complained about. They run multiple sales at the same time and often with contradicting information or weird names for things in the store being listed instead of its actual name.
The ability to do projects for free or nearly free and the occasional free meal were about the only bonuses. The staff discount was often either the same or worse than the current sale running at any given time and benefits were the bare minimum. Only good thing about them was even part time workers could recieve them after working 200hrs.
However head office will never back you up on their own policies and will constantly demand sales be better than previous years despite a massive price increase during a recession. 
In the end the few pros that come with the job don't really make up for feeling like you don't matter as a person.
Even the covid response was mediocre. Only pro there was they were among the first in my area to require masks in store. However staff had to make or buy their own and much of the protective equipment didn't arrive until long after the stores reopened. Pretty sure the only reason they closed at all is many stores would have had no staff once they gave the option to take a voluntary leave of absence and head office is in Ontario.

Put in for a full time position, only got part-time hours. Then they were cut again to a point where the pay wasn't worth the constant feeling of being watched for every little thing you did wrong. Received rude and belittling stares everyday, had other workers mock my clothing/footwear choices, and had higher employees talk down to me to the point I felt like I was lower than dirt. Came in one day and was looked at by 3 employees (which included a higher up employee) who were all huddled at the cash desk like gossiping school girls, with such a rude look I felt like turning around and leaving because I wasn't welcome. 
Management wasn't present and when they were it wasn't a good experience. Always going against each other in decisions, not willing to help customers because they were "too busy" and always making lower employees handle it when they were already busy with other customers or a task that they had to get done by end of shift.
The store itself is always moved around making it hard to find things. It's filthy with dust on fabri/ shelves and dirt on the floor everywhere. Carts of merchandise left in the middle of walking areas, with no one around to explain why it's there.
It's a minimum wage position so don't expect to be treated like a human. You're replaceable to no end. Was told it was a great place to work with a great team, to be throughly disappointed. Sure, some of the employees are nice but don't expect their kindness to rule over the other abuse you're handed.
Have to seriously wonder how the customers feel when walking into that kind of atmosphere. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Loved learning quiltting and discussing all the various craft projects, got some fabulous tips and ideas. The material selection was vast and comprehensive for every project need. Loved the friendships I formed, I still go to movies and coffee with one good friend of mine. Fantastic experience.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Had to think on the fly and some projects were better suited to others skill sets so we would tag team projects to each other as each individual project came up depending on who had the the most knowledge. Lasting friendships were formed.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is low key and very interesting, during quiet times we would stock and maintain, then a rush would come in and we would fly around. Lots of interesting projects and ideas, beautiful material!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The majority of duties was cutting fabric for customers efficiently and entertaining customer, discussing projects, coming up with solutions and ideas for projects, maintaining cleanliness and putting material back on floor. Brain storming was the majority of job and cutting fabric, inventory and stocking shelves.

Working usually 6-8 hours, most of what we do is run around tidying up and making sure everything is well stocked and professional. When not cleaning up, costumers are to be put through the cash register, and their fabrics cut. If any costumer is looking around when we walk by, we are to ask if they need assistance and how we can help. I've learned to be a lot more social and professional than I was before, working at a seasonal fast food drive in. The management is nice, but very stern; that may be good but made me extremely uncomfortable and not worthy. The management made me feel like nothing I did was good enough, however, that did help me improve myself.
My co-workers are all close, friendly to each other and always are ready to help and answer questions for newer employees. They're not exactly the nicest to costumers, I've noticed. 
The hardest part about working here was the constant struggle to impress my superiors and feeling uncomfortable with any mistakes I made. Even with this downside, I've met a lot of regulars of the store and learned new ideas from costumers. I feel happy when I am able to help a costumer to their fullest needs.

- Knowing math and measurement skills were a must in this position 
- think about 3D diagrams and how things would be needed to put together to attain the final result 
- learned to work together to maintain job-place standards, safety and look of the store
- team work is a must, one person may cut while others put away items, or even just to help you know where an item belongs
- basic knowledge of fabrics, materials, and supplies helps one to understand what a customer needs and wants are
- knowledge of patterns outlines, and how to read a pattern is a must 
- always maintained positive attitude towards customers and staff 
- workplace culture is diverse, everyone brings very different characteristics, and each background gives them good knowledge on how a customer could go about fixing/making the item of clothing, costume, backdrop, etc. 
- management is good and well rounded, managers tend to be busier during beginning and end of the work day as they set up for the day ahead or for the following day especially when a new shipment of items comes in

I love working with my coworkers but the higher ups are horrible. They aren't being paid enough for the stuff they are given. Perhaps why some are so grumpy or unnecessarily rude. I have seen one of the district managers, in person and she isn't the nicest when people strike a chord in her. I get the managers or the higher ups get really stressed but there should be BETTER ways to deal with the stress rather than passing it down.

The system is old as heck. Memberships? Paper. Fabric bills? Paper. Gift cards? No, GIFT CERTIFICATES. It gets worse with inventory and managing the products because there's so many paperwork that it's almost hard to get everything done on time. I cannot comprehend how much tasks you have to do just for minimum pay. The benefits aren't even good. There's so many of my co-workers who have worked longer than me yet they still don't earn enough or have good benefits.

I'll say, it can be fun to work here if you love sewing because you can put up your own creation on display. But to work so much only for $15? It's a terrible full time job.

Worked here for over 18 months. Co-workers with over 10 years' experience had never been given a raise. No guaranteed hours, although you must make yourself available for 2 shifts week. Often sent home if business was slow, although there was always work to do around the store. Upper management very arrogant and unpleasant. Company HR policies excessively strict but the company offers only minimum wage, no benefits, even though the work demands high level of precision and accuracy and working with incredibly inefficient, out-of-date technology. Company closes stores instead of investing in staff, equipment,  property maintenance or upkeep. A lot of the store merchandise is cheap, poor quality junk.

Fabricland is a store that will always keep you going, as there is always a crazy amount to do. The days often go by fast, but the store is nearly always understaffed and you will find yourself constantly running from one job to the next, especially on busy days when you are expected to juggle multiple customers, tasks and positions at once. Breaks are paid, and after working a certain amount of hours, you do get healthcare benefits, which is amazing for a part-time retail job. There are also semi-annual staff appreciation dinner and shopping nights, and occasional contests where you can win prizes. Unfortunately, you will often feel underappreaciated and overworked because of the amount of responsibility placed on you. That being said, your job is very secure, and though your hours may be cut in the summer, most of the year, you will be begged to work more shifts, so you can actually get full-time work here.

The work is good, you arrive, someone is always at the table waiting for you to cut their fabric so immediately you are put to work but it's a laid-back environment and everybody helps everybody out and you can take a break whenever you need to no one clocks your lunches or yells at you if you have a tea on the floor my only complaint is, rather then give everyone more hours, they hire new workers  which means it doesn't pay enough to live on unless you live at home with your parents or you are retired and looking for a hobby. It can never be your career or only job if you are living on your own and trying to actually move ahead in life and although it is promised you'll get benefits, you never actually get any benefits. All full time employees had to work there 6+ years to get where they are and even they get part time hours sometimes.
