Management
As an absolute bureaucratic mess, projects are ruled out at a snail's pace. Unsurprisingly, mismanagement accounts for millions of wasted taxpayer dollars each year. 

Employees
Generally speaking, most employees are pleasant. However, there is a noticeable divide between English and French speaking employees. Francophones typically socialize with their French co-workers, while the outnumbered Anglophones stick together. NCC hires primarily people who speak French, which can be difficult for english staffers to connect with their francophone colleagues and departments (i.e. payroll) run by people who barely speak English. Occasionally (NOT all the time), my Anglo colleagues and I would experience some snobbiness for not speaking to workers in other departments in French.  

Workplace Culture
The NCC's extremely relaxed work culture at 40 Elgin and other worksites (i.e. Gatineau Park, Rideau Hall) enables laziness in the workplace. Consequently, a toxic environment lingers as workers find every opportunity to complain about fellow NCC employees and outsourced contractors. When the workload is light, its easy to lose focus and complain about everything and anything. If this kind of negative workplace behaviour sounds discouraging, don't worry... there will be plenty of opportunities during work hours to reconcile with your colleagues. Talent shows, volleyball tournaments, bus tours through Gatineau Park during the Fall... you name it! 

You Don't Speak French? C'est la Vie.
Like most government jobs in Ottawa, French is essential. You could be a perfectly qualified candidate with excellent credentials, but your chance of getting hired or promoted is close to zero if you only speak English. The only way you'll move up in this dumpster fire of tax dollars is if you're bilingual. 

Final Points 
The NCC offers uncompetitive, non-negotiable wages; however, vacation, sick-leave and other benefits are sufficient. like most government jobs, it's EXTREMELY difficult to get fired. If you acquire a  lower level position (RE-1 to RE-3), be aware that you will also have to deal with the incompetencies of the public service union you are FORCED to join. They will offer very little help. For new employees (especially former private sector workers), it can be very frustrating to work for a crown corporation like the NCC; hence, the reason why a number of people leave after a very short period of time. 









Working for the NCC at the Official Residences was very hard work, but it paid off. As a junior gardener, I reported to the senior gardeners but I was able to organize and guide the students in order to accomplish tasks effectively and in a timely manner. Management was truly amazing as we all worked as a team and they made me feel very comfortable if I had any questions regarding plants or procedures. The hardest part of the job was that certain days it could be very physically draining, but that comes with the job title. The most enjoyable part of my job was the atmosphere and the job itself was very rewarding. The NCC/ the Official residences is a great place to work with very positive attitudes!

I was a volunteer.  It was fun.  There is really nothing more to say.  At all.  This sentence is six words long.  I don't know how to skip this.  It is forcing me to do this.

How to boss people around.

Not calling 911.

Most enjoyable part of the job:
Making people happy.

Opportunity to work from home
Teams are usually very cohesive and fun
A little less "red tape" then larger gov't organizations
Fun Sports and Social Club activities almost every month

The Mackenzie King Estate is a really fun place to work at because you're basically outside all day. It involves a lot of walking and learning and is the ideal summer job!

No complaints, best place to work. Fun environment, great colleagues. Awesome location with lots of opportunity for promotion. Great experience and fantastic management. Excellent work culture and lots of variety in terms of projects. 

I love volunteering for them. It makes me feel good to help people. They are the most welcoming and energetic people. They are always willing to make people have the best day ever. They helped me develop my costumer service skills.

During a short assignment, although I faced challenging situations, the atmosphere was of productivity and collaboration.
Management and team were supportive and willing to adopt new suggestions.
