Red Deer Native Friendship Society

I had the privilege of working with the Red Deer Native Friendship Society for five years, and it was an incredibly rewarding journey both professionally and personally.
• 	Career Growth: I began my role as a Case Worker and, through dedication and support from the organization, advanced to the position of Housing Program Coordinator. In this role, I supervised staff within the Housing department and gained valuable leadership experience.
• 	Supportive Environment: The leadership team was consistently supportive, approachable, and collaborative. Their guidance created an environment where staff could thrive and feel empowered in their roles.
• 	Community & Culture: One of the most meaningful aspects of my time here was the opportunity to work closely with the community and my fellow coworkers. I learned so much about my culture while contributing to programs that made a real difference in people’s lives.
• 	Overall Experience: Working here was more than just a job, it was a chance to grow, connect, and contribute to something bigger than myself. I am deeply grateful for the friendships, knowledge, and experiences I gained during my time with the Society.
If I could work there again I would in a heart beat.

A typical day would be sending emails, coordinating events, and planning events. That being said, often you are expected to help everyone else with their events which leaves less time for you to do your work which is then seen as an issue. 
The management team is biased and they only listen to one another. Any feedback from employees is seen as a direct and personal attack rather than coaching in a supposedly 'equal' space that they claim is like family.
Everyone gossips. About each other, about the community they serve. They will say one thing to your face, then go behind your back and say something completely different to mock and bully you or community members. 
Not. Enough. Support. That was the hardest part of the job. You can ask, talk about and even beg for help and your team will view that as weakness until you are kicked off the team and then gossiped about once you leave the doors.
The best part about that job was the community of people they serve. They are always, kind and caring and honestly don't get the attention or humility they deserve from the centre.

A typical day is trying to do your job, without any guidance or training. Asking for help is encouraged but often refused. The culture is toxic and dangerous. If you are “not Indigenous enough”, be prepared to be treated as less then. Lateral violence and family favouritism are not only allowed but encouraged. Policy is used as a weapon, but not followed by management. This organization is not Indigenous led. Clients are treated terribly, which has caused the Communty to no longer access the friendship centre. The only enjoyable part of the job, was the friendships. These friendships only last as long as employed because if you are not a favorite, you will be fired before you are able to get benifits. No care or concern for the well-being of staff.

unprofessional and unorganized business with little sense of security in an unsafe location in red deer, obvious bias towards family members and the more inexperienced workers, and relatively lousy management with little to no regard towards any complaints lodged.

Excellent staff and management however not enough staff and managers to manage the intensity of the program needed in the community and not enough funding to be able to deliver the program needed and to pay the staff equitable to their community colleagues. Benefits are it is a true family, you are supported in your work, you are very engaged with the programs and clients served. Staff are very caring as well as Management.

The Red Deer Native Friendship Society is a place that encourages all their clientele in obtaining their own self determination.  They are helpful in helping individuals and families to maintain helpful productive lifestyles. They have unique programs that benefits families, children, youth and individuals.

obvious favoritism on site with family members that wouldn't be allowed  in other workplace's . A standard needed for education as some lack of education and /or maturity , but overall a good workplace that offers good training , a relaxed environment with excellent cultural activities. Pay could be much better with free parking. 

I loved working here. Not only did it bring me closer to my culture, I made lifelong friends. I was given direction with projects, but was also trusted to be self driven. It wasn't a high stress job, they truly care about the well-being of their employees. Decent pay as well.

There ar many programs operating at the RDNFS that are open to individuals and families from birth to the elderly. This agency is growing with community need and funding opportunities.

Lots of teachings about Indigenous Culture.
Awesome team environment.

Very ethical.
Very relaxed work environment.
