Position Summary
We are a high-mix, low-volume machinery builder and stainless-steel sheet metal fabrication company seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Manufacturing Engineer / CAD-CAM, ERP & Assembly Specialist. This role is responsible for converting customer-supplied 3D models (SolidWorks / STEP files) into comprehensive, standardized shop packages, while ensuring seamless integration of engineering data into our ERP system and supporting downstream mechanical and electrical assembly operations.
This individual will play a key role in bridging engineering, fabrication, assembly, and business systems—ensuring that all technical data, process steps, and documentation are clearly defined to support efficient manufacturing, assembly, quality, and delivery.
This position is open to candidates with strong CAD, design, or modeling experience—even if they are not a licensed engineer.
Key Responsibilities:
Manufacturing Process Detailing (Fabrication & Assembly)
- Develop and document manufacturing processes for: Laser cutting, CNC bending/forming , Welding and fabrication , Mechanical assembly, Electrical assembly, Testing & Packaging
- Ensure clear handoff from fabrication to assembly with complete and accurate documentation
- Collaborate with shop floor personnel to validate manufacturability and assembly efficiency
- Update and maintain production drawings and capture red line drawings along providing red line feedback to engineering as needed along with validating changes once implemented. Maintain a log to track status and completion.
Assembly Documentation & Support
- Create detailed mechanical and electrical assembly instructions, including:
- Exploded views and assembly sequences
- Torque specifications and fastening requirements
- Cable routing, labeling, and basic electrical layout guidance
- Including quality control inputs as needed.
- Support development of assembly fixtures, jigs, and aids to improve consistency and efficiency
- Work with technicians to troubleshoot assembly issues and refine processes
- Ensure alignment between design intent and real-world assembly constraints
ERP System Integration & Data Management
- Develop and manage routing structures, including:
- Fabrication and assembly operations
- Work centers (cutting, forming, welding, assembly, testing)
- Standard setup and run times
- Ensure alignment between engineering documentation and ERP data
- Support accurate job costing, including labor for assembly operations
- Collaborate with production planning
Quality Control Support
- Assist with site visits to assess project requirements, support quoting and develop practical solutions for installation or modifications.
Work Instructions & Quality Documentation
Create and maintain:
- Work instructions for fabrication and mechanical/electrical assembly
- Inspection and test plans (including functional checks where applicable)
- Support compliance with quality systems (e.g., ISO 9001)
- Incorporate assembly verification steps to ensure product quality and completeness
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve:
- Fabrication and assembly efficiency
- Material flow and work cell layout
- Setup and assembly time reduction
- Leverage ERP data and shop feedback to drive improvements
- Support lean initiatives including standard work and error-proofing (poka-yoke)
Equipment & Tooling Support
- Assist in identifying, evaluating, and selecting new equipment, including:
- Fabrication equipment (laser, press brake, etc.)
- Assembly tools and systems (torque tools, fixturing, workstations, test equipment)
- Support with 3D scanning and printing for process improvements.
- Support ROI analysis, vendor discussions, and implementation
- Ensure new equipment integrates with both shop processes and ERP workflow
Shop Package Development
- Generate complete manufacturing/shop packages (2D, flat patters, dxf, CNC, etc) from 3D CAD models (STEP / SolidWorks files)
- Produce and validate DXF files for laser cutting and CNC operations
Site Support
- Assist with site visits as needed to assess project requirements, support quoting and develop practical solutions for installation or modifications.
Qualifications, Education & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience in sheet metal fabrication and/or equipment manufacturing
- Experience supporting mechanical assembly; exposure to electrical assembly is an asset
- Experience working in an ERP-driven manufacturing environment
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (required)
- Strong experience working with STEP files and CAD model interpretation
Knowledge of:
- Sheet metal design and flat pattern development
- Bend allowances/deductions and forming techniques
- Mechanical assembly methods and hardware selection
- Basic electrical integration concepts (layouts, cable routing, component mounting)
- Experience generating DXF files for CNC/laser cutting and other machinery
ERP & Systems Skills
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Epicor, SAP, Oracle NetSuite, or similar)
- Strong understanding of:
- Multi-level BOMs including mechanical and electrical components
- Routings including fabrication and assembly steps
- Costing methodologies (standard vs actual)
- Experience with revision control and engineering change management
Other Skills
- Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
- Hands-on, practical understanding of shop and assembly environments

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a high-mix, low-volume fabrication and assembly environment
- Familiarity with panel building, industrial equipment assembly, or automation systems
- Experience with assembly line setup or cell-based manufacturing
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and standard work development
Pay: $80,000.00-$105,000.00 per year
