POSITION PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Manufacturing & Maintenance Supervisor, the CNC Machinist - Custom Manufacturing is responsible for manufacturing precision-machined components used in Septimatech's packaging line productivity solutions. Working closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering, Quality, and Assembly, this position supports the production of both standard and custom engineered components while ensuring the highest standards of quality, workmanship, and on-time delivery.
As a key member of the Manufacturing Team, the CNC Machinist sets up and operates CNC and conventional machine tools to manufacture precision components in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment. This role includes a combination of routine production work, engineered-to-order manufacturing, and continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering, the CNC Machinist supports new product development, improves manufacturability, and helps resolve manufacturing challenges.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up, program, and operate assigned CNC and conventional manufacturing equipment to manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, manufacturing plans, work instructions, and quality requirements.
- Work in compliance with company Health & Safety policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and all applicable regulations and legislation.
- Deliver high-quality workmanship while completing assigned work safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer requirements and Septimatech quality standards.
- Develop, modify, verify, and optimize CNC programs to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient machining operations.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, bills of materials, manufacturing plans, and work instructions to determine setup requirements and machining operations.
- Select, install, and align appropriate tooling, workholding, fixtures, materials, and machine accessories required to safely and efficiently complete assigned work.
- Perform machine setups, prove-out new programs, make tooling and offset adjustments, and verify first-off parts prior to production.
- Manufacture precision components that consistently meet engineering drawings, specifications, quality standards, and customer requirements.
- Inspect completed components using precision measuring equipment to verify dimensional accuracy and conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Complete assigned work orders accurately and in accordance with established production schedules and manufacturing priorities.
- Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering, Quality, Assembly, and other manufacturing team members to resolve manufacturing issues and support the successful completion of customer orders.
- Communicate machining concerns, design observations, and improvement opportunities to Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering to improve manufacturability, support continuous improvement, and enhance future product designs.
- Provide recommendations to improve machining methods, tooling, fixturing, manufacturing efficiency, and overall shop productivity.
- Assist in the manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance of fixtures, tooling, and shop aids used to support manufacturing operations.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, daily equipment inspections, and equipment troubleshooting while reporting concerns that could affect safety, quality, or production.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company housekeeping standards and manufacturing best practices.
- Follow Septimatech’s quality management system, manufacturing procedures, inspection requirements, and documentation standards while identifying and reporting non-conformances when required.
- Support Assembly and other manufacturing departments by machining, modifying, fitting, or adapting components as required to meet customer and production requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that improve safety, quality, delivery, manufacturing efficiency, and overall operational performance.
- Participate in cross-training opportunities to develop proficiency on additional manufacturing equipment and support operational flexibility across the Manufacturing Team.
- Demonstrate flexibility by supporting changing production priorities, overtime requirements, and other manufacturing activities as required to meet customer commitments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- College diploma, technical school diploma, trade certification, apprenticeship, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Red Seal Machinist Certificate or completion of a recognized apprenticeship program would be considered an asset.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in CNC machining, custom manufacturing, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience setting up, programming, and operating CNC machine tools.
- Experience operating conventional machine tools and manufacturing equipment including manual mills, lathes, drill presses, band saws, and other shop equipment.
- Experience using CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks, CAMWorks, Mastercam, or equivalent software to review engineering models and create, modify, and optimize CNC machining programs.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, bills of materials, manufacturing plans, work instructions, and technical documentation.
- Proficient in the use of precision measuring equipment including vernier calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other inspection equipment in both Imperial and Metric systems.
- Experience machining stainless steel, aluminum, engineering plastics (including UHMW), and other common manufacturing materials. Experience machining titanium would be considered an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot machining, tooling, and manufacturing challenges.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to identify practical manufacturing solutions while maintaining quality, safety, and production requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple assignments, and meet production schedules in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering, Quality, Assembly, and other manufacturing team members.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate manufacturing concerns, technical observations, and improvement opportunities effectively.
- Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, integrity, accountability, and a strong work ethic.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Forklift, overhead crane, CPR, First Aid, and other industrial safety certifications would be considered an asset.
- Must be physically capable of performing manufacturing activities, including occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
