Full job description

Moose Deer Point First Nation is seeking a respectful, knowledgeable, and community-minded Cultural Advisor to join our Governance Department.

Reporting to the Governance Director, the Cultural Advisor provides practical guidance to support the preservation, respectful sharing, and continued growth of Anishinaabe culture, language, teachings, history, and community protocols within Moose Deer Point First Nation.

This is a hands-on, community-focused role that works closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Chief and Council, staff, youth, families, and community members. The Cultural Advisor supports cultural activities and gatherings, helps strengthen cultural and language resources, and contributes a cultural perspective to MDPFN policies, programs, services, and communications.

The successful candidate will exercise sound judgment, protect culturally sensitive and confidential information, and build respectful relationships throughout the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Include, but are not limited to:

· Provide guidance on Anishinaabe traditions, teachings, ceremonies, community protocols, and respectful cultural practices.

· Support the planning and delivery of cultural gatherings, ceremonies, workshops, seasonal activities, and community events.

· Build and maintain respectful relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, families, community members, Chief and Council, and MDPFN staff.

· Promote Anishinaabemowin and help connect community members and staff with appropriate language and cultural resources.

· Assist with cultural and historical research and the respectful documentation of community knowledge where permission has been provided.

· Provide practical cultural advice during the development or review of MDPFN policies, programs, services, communications, and community initiatives.

· Support staff in using respectful, culturally appropriate language and approaches when working with community members.

· Help identify opportunities to strengthen cultural programming and encourage participation across generations.

· Maintain a work plan and calendar of cultural activities and provide concise updates to the Governance Director.

· Coordinate with staff and community partners on cultural activities, materials, supplies, schedules, and other practical arrangements.

· Protect confidential, personal, and culturally sensitive information and ensure knowledge is shared only with appropriate consent.

· Perform other related duties as assigned by the Governance Director or Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications

· Strong knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, teachings, history, and community protocols gained through lived, community, educational, or professional experience.

· Demonstrated experience working respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, families, community leadership, or Indigenous organizations.

· Education or training in Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, Community Development, Governance, or a related field is an asset; an equivalent combination of knowledge and experience will be considered.

· Strong communication, organization, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to facilitate conversations and cultural activities in a respectful, inclusive, and community-minded manner.

· Sound judgment, discretion, and respect for cultural, personal, and organizational confidentiality.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, community-focused team.

· Anishinaabemowin language skills are a strong asset but are not required.

· Valid Ontario G driver's license and reliable access to transportation for community-related travel.

· Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends to support ceremonies, gatherings, and community events.

· Ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and, where required, a Vulnerable Sector Check.
