Position Summary
Bow Valley College is seeking a knowledgeable, supportive, and learner-focused Educational Assistant – Hospital Pharmacy Technician. Reporting to the program leadership team and working closely with instructors, the Educational Assistant plays an integral role in creating an exceptional learning experience for students both inside and outside the classroom.
This role provides academic and laboratory support to learners, helping them strengthen their understanding of pharmacy technician concepts, develop effective study strategies, and build confidence in their skills. The Educational Assistant collaborates with instructors to support classroom and laboratory instruction, assist with assessments and examinations, and contributes to a positive and inclusive learning environment where all learners can succeed.
The successful candidate brings strong hospital pharmacy technician expertise, a passion for supporting learner success, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with learners from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience.
What You'll Be Doing:
Support Instruction and Student Learning: Collaborate closely with instructors to create engaging, learner-centered educational experiences in both classroom and laboratory settings. Provide individual and small-group academic support to learners who require additional assistance, helping them strengthen their understanding of Pharmacy Technician concepts, develop effective study habits, and improve overall academic performance. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation, confidence, and learner success.
Maintain regular communication with instructors regarding learner progress, classroom dynamics, and curriculum delivery while modeling professional behaviours and positive academic attitudes. As required, provide supervision of laboratory activities during brief instructor absences to ensure continuity of learning.
Support Laboratory Learning and Assessment Activities: Assist instructors in the preparation, facilitation, and delivery of laboratory learning experiences that help learners develop practical pharmacy technician skills. Provide guidance and technical support during laboratory activities, reinforcing concepts and procedures taught by instructors.
Support the administration of skills assessments and examinations by invigilating exams, ensuring academic integrity standards are upheld, responding appropriately to learner questions, and addressing examination irregularities according to established procedures. This role also assists with the organization, collection, and management of examination materials and supports the supervision of learners during assessment activities.
Provide Learner Support and Resource Coordination: Serve as a key resource for learners by providing academic guidance, technical support, and encouragement throughout their educational journey. Assist learners who are experiencing difficulties with course materials by clarifying concepts, identifying learning strategies, and helping them build confidence in their abilities.
Collaborate with instructors and Student Services to support learners requiring accommodations and facilitate access to available support services. Contribute to the development, selection, and adaptation of learning resources that meet the needs of learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, learning styles, and levels of language proficiency. Promote learner independence by helping learners develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed both academically and professionally.
Support Program Operations and Administrative Activities: Contribute to the effective day-to-day operation of the Pharmacy Technician program by supporting learner onboarding, maintaining current knowledge of course materials, and ensuring administrative requirements are completed accurately and on time. Assist with learner orientation activities by providing information about program expectations, available services, and support resources.
Demonstrate professionalism through strong organizational skills, effective time management, and the ability to coordinate schedules, resources, and activities in support of instructional delivery. Complete required documentation and administrative tasks while maintaining a high level of accuracy, reliability, and attention to detail.
What Sets You Apart
You are a learner-focused Pharmacy Technician professional who is passionate about supporting student success and creating an inclusive, engaging learning environment. You bring a Pharmacy Technician Certificate, current registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy, and a minimum of five years of pharmacy technician experience, including at least two years in a hospital pharmacy setting. Experience mentoring, training, or supporting learners is considered a strong asset.
You can communicate complex concepts clearly and adapt your approach to meet the needs of learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, learning styles, and language proficiency levels. Your strong interpersonal skills, patience, and cultural awareness enable you to build positive relationships and foster learner confidence while encouraging independence and critical thinking.
As a collaborative and organized professional, you demonstrate excellent communication, presentation, and time management skills. You are comfortable working independently and as part of a team, can effectively assess learner comprehension and respond to varying learning needs, and are skilled at guiding learners toward solutions without doing the work for them. Above all, you are committed to creating meaningful learning experiences that help learners achieve their academic and professional goals.
Qualifications:
Minimum
- Pharmacy Technician certificate
- Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Alberta College of Pharmacy.
- 5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician.
- 2 years of experience working in a hospital pharmacy.
- An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
- Police information checks including a vulnerable sector.
Preferred
- Pharmacy Technician diploma.
- Experience training coworkers and/or practicum students.
- Experience working with learners from beginner to advanced levels, and with learners with interrupted formal education.
- Ability to work independently and on a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational, presentation and time management skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to recognize variations in learner backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
- Ability to interact in a friendly and patient manner with learners from different cultural backgrounds, learners of all levels of language proficiency, and learners who may require accommodations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and assess learners’ comprehension levels by varying methods.
- Ability to respond to learner writing both holistically and analytically.
- Ability to listen actively and effectively to identify and solve problems, facilitate learning for learners, and build learner confidence.
- Ability to help/guide learners without doing the work for them.
