Registered Early Childhood Educator for an Infant Program
11:30 am to 6:00 pm
Job Summary
The Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) collaborates closely with all other members of the program team to provide nurturing play-based early learning to support each child in realizing their potential while giving families peace of mind.
Job duties are performed in accordance with Program Statement, policies, values and beliefs of RisingOaks Early Learning, the Child Care and Early Years Act and the College of ECEs Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, under the supervision of the Centre Supervisor.
Qualifications & Experience
- Early Childhood Education Diploma
- Registered member of the College of ECEs in good standing
- Practicum experience in a child care setting gained through post-secondary program or equivalent
- Standard First Aid and CPR (level C) training
Required Knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of domains of childhood development
- Knowledge of the Child Care & Early Years Act, its regulations, and licensing requirements.
- Demonstrated understanding of How Does Learning Happen?, Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years.
- Knowledge of curriculum theories, observation and documentation techniques
- Knowledge of a diversity of family contexts and the impact these have on our work with children.
Responsibility: Supervision
- Is responsible for the constant supervision, safety and wellbeing of the children in accordance with RisingOaks’ Child Supervision policy, procedures and practices.
- Recognizes and responds to the needs of each child by using developmentally appropriate teaching and child behaviour management techniques
- Participates fully and consistently in caring for and engaging with the children in play, exploration and inquiry.
- Participates in the supervision, training and mentoring of students, Early Childhood Facilitators, casual employees (both RECE and ECF) and volunteers.
Responsibility: Health & Safety
- Ensure that the environment is safe and accessible for all children and families.
- Take appropriate steps to ensure that the environment complies with occupational health, public health and licensing standards.
- Observe and monitor the learning environment and take responsibility to avoid exposing children to harmful or unsafe situations.
- Obtain information and familiarize yourself with Individual Support/Medical Plans concerning children’s relevant medical conditions, special needs, disabilities, allergies, medication requirements and emergency contact information.
- Participate in any training required to meet the health and safety of all children (e.g., diabetic training, Safety First!, WHMIS, First Aid & CPR)
- Accept and administer medication in accordance with RisingOaks’ policies.
- Implement strategies to ensure sufficient time for safe and supportive transitions while maintaining supervision at all times
- Assess and develop safety measures when planning and implementing off site activities (Safety First).
Responsibility: Program Design & Implementation
- Draw from professional knowledge of child development, learning theories and pedagogical and curriculum approaches to plan, implement, document and assess child-centered, inquiry and play-based learning experiences for children.
- Value the rights of children and create learning environments where all children can experience a sense of belonging, engagement, expression and well-being.
- Foster children’s joy of learning through child-centered and play-based pedagogy.
- Seek out available information regarding the relevant family circumstances of children and the factors that may contribute to shaping their individual and family identity, being responsive to the holistic needs of children.
- Support children in developing coping skills, self-regulation and interacting positively with others.
- Observe children to identify individual and group needs and interests.
- Collaborate with children to co-plan and implement a child-centered and play-based curriculum.
- Design or modify indoor and outdoor learning environments to support children’s self-regulation, independence, reasonable risk-taking, meaningful exploration and positive interactions.
- Provide all children with opportunities for engagement, exploration and expression.
- Work collaboratively with families and colleagues to plan meaningful learning experiences and support problem solving and decision making.
- Lead children and educators in the Project Approach and prepare documentation of the children’s’ learning.
- Plan offsite excursions or invite guests to deepen the children’s knowledge on learning opportunities.
Responsibility: Evaluation
- Use documentation for critical reflection to enhance the program and consider new ideas and approaches.
- Evaluate your program using an environmental assessment tool (e.g., ECERS-R, ITERS-R or SACERS, PQA)
- Complete a written evaluation of each child’s development using the approved tool.
- Complete a written evaluation of the high school and college students
- Attend case conferences, provide feedback regarding Individual Support Plans for children with special needs and evaluate their progress along with cooperating agency and/or resource consultant
- Completes an annual written self-evaluation, including at least one developmental objective.
Responsibility: Records
- Record attendance and daily health checks immediately upon each child’s arrival.
- Document children’s learning experiences in order to reflect upon and assess children’s growth and the curriculum (e.g., daily logs, emails, learning stories, project documentation, photos, etc.).
- Maintain records required by ministry such as sleep logs, Individual Support Plans, Food Agreements, menus and playground inspections
- Record and/or read and respond to messages from parents and other staff in the communication book.
- Complete and process medication consent/administration forms and incident reports per RisingOaks’ policies, procedures and practices.
- Record and/or read the Daily Journal and ensure that entries are made to record incidents, special visits, program changes, special requests, etc.
- Be aware of information in child’s file and any changes that occur. Report any changes that you become aware of to centre management.
Responsibility: Professionalism
- Speak positively about the organization and present yourself in a professional manner when in public (e.g., phone calls, during workshops, tours, field trips and with family and friends).
- Communicate the value and importance of early childhood education in their communities and to the broader public.
- Respect confidentiality and ensure that communication (verbal and written) is done in a manner consistent with RisingOaks’ policies as it relates to privacy legislation.
- Comply with the Child and Family Services Act about their duty to report suspected child abuse and neglect to the Children’s Aid Society.
- Be an active participant in the College of ECEs Continuous Professional Learning program.
Responsibility: Public Relations & Communication
- Build and maintain responsive and collaborative relationships with families.
- Provide meaningful opportunities for families to engage in and contribute to the learning environment and their child’s experiences.
- Use appropriate and effective communication methods and strategies to share information with families regarding the development and learning of children.
- Advocate for the well-being of children and families.
- Ensure that communications with children, families and colleagues are professional and that use of technology and social media is consistent with professional boundaries and RisingOaks’ policies, procedures and practices.
- Build connections and collaborate with community partners to enhance programs and promote the integration of services.
- Understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries with children, families and colleagues and work to reduce the impact of dual relationships (as defined by the College of ECEs).
Responsibility: Financial
- Responsible for small program purchases using petty cash, providing receipts and proof of items purchased upon return.
- To identify, and communicate to your supervisor, the need for additional program supplies, toys, craft materials and loose parts required for a high quality program.
- As applicable, safeguard payments or payment forms received from parents.
Responsibility: Working Conditions
- Employment is conditional upon providing a clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check and the completion of a medical history survey.
- Exposure to illness, disease, bodily fluids and stress from caring for children.
- May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: gloves, gowns, lab coats, safety glasses, face shield, medical mask. Any such requirements will be stipulated in policy and PPE provided to you.
- May have occasional exposure to physical aggression (e.g., kicking, biting, hair pulling, scratching, spitting) from a child.
- May have occasional exposure to verbal aggression (e.g., raised voice, inappropriate language) from children, parents or coworkers
- Works in a climate controlled environment with recycled air; also exposed to varied temperatures and weather conditions due to outdoor play and field trips.
- Work is regularly messy; at times may be dusty.
- Lack of privacy; large group setting
- May be reassigned to a different room and/or centre due to business needs.
Responsibility: Mental & Physical Effort
- Job requires multi-tasking to meet job demands
- Open and close the centre. Unlock, turn lights on, call in casual employees if necessary, prepare classroom. Responsible for security of equipment and buildings.
- Apply good judgment while constantly vigilant and quick to respond to needs.
- Work in an environment that is very noisy with constant interruptions with little or no choice or opportunity to take a break.
- When working with children you lift, bend, reach, stoop, squat, kneel, sit on the floor or child size equipment, swim, toboggan, skate, skip, climb, walk, run, pull, push strollers, swings, manipulate wheel chairs, carry trays or children.
- Responsible to assemble, arrange or rearrange furniture and equipment as required.
- Dress and undress children (e.g., winter clothing and during toilet routines)
- At times, may be responsible for garbage removal recycling, shoveling or salting.
- Estimated to be moderate intensity activities averaging up to 4 hours per day and high intensity 2 to 4 hours per day.
