The Justice Supports and Services Division of the Department of Justice helps facilitate court ordered child and spousal support and offers a range of services to help victims of crime.
Within Victim Services, we promote victims’ rights and interests and advise government on issues relating to victims of crime. We also work with justice partners and the community to develop policies and programs that address the needs of crime victims. We provide the victim, spouse, or relative, with information, support and assistance as their case moves through the criminal justice system. When criminal charges are laid, victims and family members can contact us directly for help. We provide a range of services including the following programs: Provincial Victim Services Program, Child Victim/Witness Program, Criminal Injuries Counselling Program, Victim Impact Statement Program, Restitution Program, Sexual Offense Legal Representation Program, and Independent Legal Advice Program.
As the Family Information Liaison Unit Coordinator (FILUCC), you are responsible for the administration and delivery of programs and services within the Provincial Victim Services Program to families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people in Nova Scotia. Responsibilities include maintaining an effective communication network with Justice, community and government officials at the regional, provincial, territorial, and federal level, liaison with the Nova Scotia Native Women's Association (NSNWA), coordinating enhanced services for families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people within the criminal justice system and the community and providing navigational support, interpreting and communicating court processes and decisions to aid in understanding, monitoring and recommending intervention strategies to address identified gaps in service, monitoring and evaluating services, developing effective intervention strategies to meet the specialized needs of families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. Providing training, supporting families in access to justice, providing and facilitating referrals to culturally appropriate resources, and providing direct in-person client services provincially.
Areas of program responsibility includes the Family information Liaison Unit (FILU) and supports and services for Indigenous victims of crime.
- Focus on FILU support, outreach, and education within the province as a priority.
- Assists in managing projects and initiatives based on program needs.
- Maintaining an effective communication network with Justice, community and government officials, liaison with Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association.
- Coordinating enhanced services for families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime within the criminal justice system and the community and providing navigational support, interpreting, and communicating court processes and decisions to aid in understanding.
- Monitoring and recommending intervention strategies to address identified gaps in service at the community level.
- Monitoring and evaluating services and developing effective intervention strategies to meet the specialized needs of families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime.
- Providing training, supporting families and victims for access to justice
- Providing and facilitating referrals to culturally appropriate resources, and providing direct in-person client services provincially
- Operating with significant independence in the coordination of services to families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime across all areas of the province
As the successful candidate you will have a bachelor’s degree (typically in the Social Sciences) in a related field plus 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Related experience includes (but is not limited to) providing client services in the community to families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime. Lived experience in an Indigenous community is an asset.
You are effective at managing and prioritizing a heavy workload effectively with excellent case management skills. In addition, you have strong organizational skills, and you undertake delegated tasks and work independently.
The competency you have developed proactively identifying and addressing the needs and concerns of clients and community will be important in this role. The ability to develop a network and work with Indigenous supports within community is required.
In addition to your strong communication and interpersonal skills, you listen proactively and understand the perspectives of others. Your expertise allows you to collaborate effectively with various partners while providing supports and services to families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime, developing program plans, reviewing, and updating programs, and assisting with program evaluation.
A high level of judgement, independent decision-making and discretion is required in exercising the duties of the FILUCC in accordance with the policies and procedures and best practices set out by the division. The FILUCC operates with significant independence in the coordination of services to families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime across all areas of the province.
You will demonstrate empathy, warmth, and tact along with an in-depth understanding of human dynamics and the effects of victimization. Sound judgment and the ability to work with self-confidence and decisiveness are also important in this role.
Access to reliable transportation is required as you will be responsible for supporting families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and Indigenous victims of crime across all areas of the province.
The following would be considered assets: experience working with families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people and victims of crime; understanding of first-voice, trauma-informed and intersectional service delivery approaches; previous program coordination experience; knowledge of applicable government legislation (i.e. Victims Rights and Services Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Nova Scotia Workplace Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights).
We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Salary Range: $2,805.63 - $3,410.48 Bi-Weekly
