Full job description

BG Excavating Limited is a growing civil contractor providing excavation services across the National Capital Region and surrounding areas. Since its founding in 2019, the company has built a strong reputation supporting commercial, institutional, retail, and government clients on a range of site development projects. Specializing in site development, sewer and watermain, demolition, and septic work, BG Excavating combines hands-on expertise with a practical, solutions-driven approach to every project. Built on experience and driven to be different, the company continues to grow and evolve, supported by a collaborative, entrepreneurial team environment.

BG Excavating is seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to take ownership of the company’s finance function. This is a newly created role established to support the continued growth of the business and to help build a dedicated financial structure. Working closely with ownership, the Controller will manage day-to-day accounting operations, oversee cash flow, and support project financials, while helping to bring structure and consistency to the company’s financial processes. This is an on-site role in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Salary Range: $80,000 – $85,000/year

Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

Own the full accounting function for BG Excavating, including month-end and year-end processes.
Prepare financial statements and maintain accurate, reliable financial records.
Manage payroll, benefits, and coordination with external accountants.

Cash Flow & Operations

Manage day-to-day cash flow, aligning incoming payments with outgoing obligations.
Oversee accounts payable and receivable, including collections and payment scheduling.
Work directly with suppliers and subcontractors to manage payment timing and maintain strong relationships.

Project Accounting

Support job costing, progress billings, and project-related financial tracking.
Monitor project performance and maintain accurate WIP reporting.

Process Improvement & Controls

Support the development of financial processes and improve overall structure and efficiency.
Ensure compliance with tax, remittances, and regulatory requirements.

Business Partnership

Work closely with ownership to provide financial insight and support decision-making.
Operate with a high level of autonomy, identifying issues and recommending practical solutions.

Qualifications

Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a construction environment.
CPA designation is considered an asset.
Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and project-based financials.
Experience managing full-cycle accounting, including AP/AR, payroll, and month-end close.
Comfortable working in a hands-on role with a high level of autonomy and accountability.
Ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work directly with suppliers, project teams, and ownership.
Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
