Full job description

The Veteran Family Program Coordinator supports the Veteran Family Program (VFP)

through Military Family Resource Centre’s (MFRC) as outlined in the MFRC

Partnership Agreement with Military Family Services (MFS) and the Memorandum of

Understanding between MFS and Veterans Affairs Canada.

This position is dedicated to supporting medically releasing Canadian Armed Forces

(CAF) members, medically released CAF Veterans and their families as they transition

into civilian life.

Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of the MFRC and liaising with VFP and Military

Family Services (MFS) staff, the Veteran Family Program Coordinator will be

responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and

services that will assist CAF members, veterans, and their families during the pre-

release and post-release of a medical (3B) release, and the transition to civilian

supports and services.

The Veteran Family Program Coordinator helps to determine the needs of the VFPC

clients and acts as a bridge between the transitioning family, DND, VAC, civilian support

services along with other relevant service providers.

Responsibilities

 Promote the Military Family Services Program (MFSP) to respond to the needs of

medically released CAF Veterans and their families.

 Provide or support the development of awareness sessions, briefings and

resources pertaining to change management and transitioning into a civilian

community.

 Provide information and referral services for the support and/or counsel of family

members in crisis or imminent crisis.

 Conduct and/or refer group and individual education sessions to support the

transition to civilian life.

 Establish contact with medically releasing CAF members, medically released

members and their families to provide a general overview of the services of the

VFP and MFRC.

 Assist medically releasing CAF members, medically released Veterans and their

families in their navigation of, and access to, relevant community programs and

services, facilitate referrals to appropriate agencies/organizations as needed.

 Provide follow-up with families to ensure referrals have been utilized and are

meeting the family’s needs and provide ongoing support to families as required.

 Develop and maintain strong community partnerships with both civilian and

military organizations and stakeholders.

Maintain open communication with VFP and the other Veteran Family Program

Coordinators to ensure continuity of service provided across all 32 MFRC’s.

 Maintain records as required.

 Collaborate on the coordination and provision of general information briefs for

chain of command, CAF and Veteran’s Affairs Canada (VAC) personnel, and

CAF and VAC communities and community agencies and partners.

 Coordinate the collection of statistical data pertaining to each activity and ensure

all data is reported as requested.

 Evaluate services both formally and informally on an ongoing basis that is

compatible with the MFRC’s and VFP’s overall evaluation plan and develop

annual goals/statistics for the program that are outcome-based and measurable.

 Ensure all activities operate within budget guidelines.

 In collaboration with the MFRC and VFP communications departments, actively

promote VFP programs, resources and services by such means as making public

appearances, circulate pamphlets and posters, provide general information

briefings, attend briefings and preparing articles for regular submissions to the

marketing and promotions area of the MFRC.

practice in order to assist families in accessing services and support.

 Have a full understanding of MFRC programs and services to enable quality

referrals for families into services and supports.

 Maintain a constant awareness of the client and exhibits recognition and

appreciation of their needs and achieves results with positive outcomes for

individuals and families with the program.

 Possess a high degree of personal initiative with excellent planning and

organizational skills.

 Willingness to work flexible hours.

 Ability to prepare written reports, correspondence and maintain accurate records

 Ability to work independently and as member of a multi-disciplinary team.

 Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid

conclusions.

 Ability to meet deadlines in a timely and efficient manner.

 Continuing personal and professional development in related areas.

Desired knowledge and experience

 Post-secondary degree in social services field or equivalent combination of

education and experience.

 Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with preference given to

those bilingual in both official languages.

 Understand the unique military lifestyle issues facing medically releasing

Veterans and their families and knowledge of agencies and organizations with

applicable support services.

 Excellent intrapersonal skills under all types of conditions, exhibiting a supportive

positive approach, and sensitivity and tact in dealing with people under stressful

situations.

 Maintain, in a secure location, records and confidential case notes on all clients.

 Participates in the developing of new ideas and methods for program

enhancement and the ability to adjust and adapt to changes.

 Possess strong computer skills, specifically in Office 365.

Working conditions

 The position is required to sit at a computer for periods of time.

 The position may require special hours, including weekends and evenings.

 Work may require dealing with emotionally intense situations.
