Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Coordinator, Forestry, the Forest Field Technician is responsible for helping manage a range of programs within our existing forest resource as well as helping maximise the opportunities and values of that resource. The Forest Field Technician is also responsible for enhancing overall watershed forest management with our partners. In this position you will have an opportunity to:

Provide support to the Forestry Coordinator and Forestry team in the ongoing development and delivery of Conservation Halton’s Forestry Program
Forestry project support through contractor supervision, invoicing, and financial tracking
Preparing and reviewing forest management plans including undertaking inventory, mapping, and other associated duties. Prepare MFTIP management plans for both private and Conservation Halton properties.
Participate in the seed collection program including forecasting, collection, and delivery to nurseries.
Support the delivery of community and public outreach activities by working with a variety of teams
Providing technical advice and carrying out field inspections of the suitability of private property for conservation services assistance programs.
Compile forest inventories in designated Conservation Halton forestry tracts and private lands, including field work, mapping, and reporting.
Supporting Forestry Coordinator in forest management operations: tree marking, contractor supervision, roads and landings layout, operational planning
Delivery of invasive species management on Conservation Halton lands and providing technical advice to private property owners regarding the same
Complete annual reports for properties owned and/or managed by Conservation Halton.
Operating equipment such as trucks, chainsaws, trailers, atv’s, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, forestry hand tools such as suunto and wedge prism
Will perform duties and ensure that assigned employees and volunteers work in accordance with Conservation Halton’s safety policies and procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Other duties as assigned by the Forestry Coordinator

Your Qualifications

Degree/Diploma in Forestry or equivalent post-secondary education
Minimum of three years experience in forestry and forest management operations, including creating and implementation of managed forest projects
Prior experience within a park setting or with a Conservation Authority is an asset
Certified Tree Marker or ability to gain certified status
Certified Seed Collector and Butternut Health Expert certification considered an asset
Managed Forest Plan Approver considered an asset
Pesticide applicator licenses (Forestry) considered an asset
Full or associate membership with OPFA would be considered an asset
Familiarity and experience with GIS software and use of field GPS instruments
Experience using various collection applications, forest inventory tools and databases.
Ability to work with computer software and administrative systems in a Windows environment
Confident in tree, flora and fauna and forest pest identification skills within the Great Lakes-St Lawrence Region
The ability to perform physically demanding work in all-weather conditions, remote work sites and terrain
Able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, and walk for long periods of time
A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class “G”, with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is required; operating CVOR vehicles an asset. *Abstract completed by Conservation Halton
Ability to operate a variety of equipment including Tractors, ATV’s, Ventrac, Chainsaws
Successful candidate will be required to have Standard First Aid and CPR certification prior to first day of employment
A chainsaw safety certification would be considered an asset
