Job Summary

The Sugar Packaging Equipment Line Supervisor oversees daily high-speed sugar packaging and bulk handling operations. Operating in Hamilton's expanding food processing sector, this role leads a team of machine operators, packaging technicians, and material handlers.

You will be responsible for maintaining equipment efficiency (OEE), ensuring strict compliance with Canadian food safety standards (CFIA/HACCP/GFSI), maintaining worker safety under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and driving continuous improvement across automatic bagging, tote filling, and palletizing lines.

We are looking for one (1) experienced and skilled Sugar Packaging Equipment Line Supervisor for our facility in Hamilton, Ontario.

Key Responsibilities

Line Operations & Equipment Management

Oversee high-speed and bulk packaging lines (e.g., 20kg–50lb baggers, tote/FIBC filling, retail/foodservice pouch lines, automated robotic arm palletizers, and stretch wrappers).
Monitor key operating metrics including Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), throughput rates, changeover times, and material yield loss.
Perform first-line troubleshooting on mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical packaging machinery (e.g., weigh scales, metal detectors, X-ray inspection systems, heat sealers, liquid/dry filling machinery).
Partner with Maintenance Technicians to schedule and execute Preventative Maintenance (PM) and rapid machine changeovers between product runs (e.g., granulated, brown, icing, or organic sugar formats).

Quality Assurance & Food Safety Compliance

Maintain strict adherence to GFSI standards (SQF/BRCGS), HACCP, CFIA guidelines, and Kosher/Halal/Organic certifications.
Conduct and verify quality checks (seal integrity, weight checks, metal detection tests, coding/lot tracing, moisture control, and dust mitigation).
Lead immediate root-cause investigations and corrective action implementation (CAPA) when quality non-conformances occur on the line.
Enforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), allergen controls, and strict sanitation routines across the packaging bay.

Team Leadership & People Management

Supervise, coach, and deploy a team of 10–20 shift operators and technicians in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Conduct shift start-up safety huddles, assign daily line roles, and manage shift handovers to ensure seamless continuity.
Manage shift schedules, and support operator training on machine operation, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and safe material handling.
Ensure workplace practices comply with Ontario labor standards and internal health, safety, and operational policies.

Safety, Health & Environmental (EHS)

Enforce strict compliance with Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and workplace safety policies.
Oversee combustible dust safety management (combustible sugar dust controls, explosion suppression systems, housekeeping protocols, and PPE compliance).
Identify and eliminate safety hazards, conduct accident/incident investigations, and participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) audits.

Requirements

Equipment Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on experience working directly with automated packaging equipment in a food processing, consumer packaged goods (CPG), or industrial manufacturing environment.
Supervisory Experience: Demonstrated leadership capability (e.g., as a Line Lead, Shift Supervisor, or Senior Packaging Technician) managing floor operators and production priorities.
Education: High school diploma required; College Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Operations Management, or a related field is a strong asset.
Technical Knowledge: Automated bagging systems, load cells, checkweighers, industrial robotics, conveyors, heat sealers, and inkjet coding systems.
Software: Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Working Conditions

Environment: Industrial food manufacturing facility. Exposure to ambient noise, sugar dust, heat, and variable warehouse temperatures.
Shifts: Rotating 8-hour or 12-hour continental shift schedules (including day, night, and weekend coverage as required by production schedules).
Physical Demands: Standing, walking, climbing stairs/catwalks, and inspecting packaging equipment for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs) as needed during line setup or clearing blockages.

Pay: $28.00-$30.00 per hour
