Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Sales, the Logistics Manager is responsible for the strategic planning, coordination, and oversight of all transportation and logistics activities supporting Presteve Foods Limited's domestic and international operations. This includes managing inbound and outbound transportation, fleet operations, export logistics, regulatory compliance, departmental budgeting, customer service, and continuous improvement initiatives.
The Logistics Manager provides leadership to the Company's transportation team while working collaboratively with Sales, Operations, Procurement, Production, Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Finance, and Human Resources to ensure the efficient, safe, and cost-effective movement of products and raw materials. This position plays a critical role in supporting operational excellence, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and the Company's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation & Logistics Operations
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee all inbound and outbound transportation activities to support production and customer requirements.
- Schedule and coordinate domestic and international shipments, including full truckload (FTL), less-than-truckload (LTL), refrigerated transportation, air freight, ocean freight, and courier services.
- Coordinate export shipments and ensure all customs documentation, permits, certificates, and shipping documentation are completed accurately and within required timelines.
- Schedule daily and weekly fish pickups from commercial fishermen and other suppliers to support production requirements.
- Coordinate inventory transfers between Company facilities.
- Develop transportation schedules that maximize fleet utilization while maintaining customer service expectations.
- Monitor shipment status and proactively communicate delays, risks, or service disruptions to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Respond to transportation emergencies, customer concerns, and operational issues outside of regular business hours, as required.
- Develop contingency plans to minimize operational disruptions caused by weather, border delays, equipment failures, labour shortages, or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with customers, suppliers, fishermen, freight carriers, and other transportation partners.
Fleet Management
- Oversee the Company's fleet to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance programs with the Maintenance Department to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
- Ensure all vehicles, trailers, and transportation equipment remain properly licensed, inspected, maintained, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Monitor fleet utilization and recommend equipment replacements, upgrades, and capital purchases.
- Develop annual fleet replacement plans and capital expenditure recommendations.
- Manage relationships with vehicle suppliers, leasing companies, maintenance providers, fuel vendors, and transportation service providers.
- Monitor fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and fleet performance to identify cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies.
- Maintain complete and accurate fleet records.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop drivers and transportation personnel.
- Recruit, interview, onboard, and train transportation employees.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide regular coaching and performance feedback.
- Address attendance, performance, and conduct concerns in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Recommend disciplinary action, promotions, and terminations in partnership with Human Resources.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained to support operational requirements.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Compliance & Regulatory Responsibilities
- Ensure transportation operations comply with all applicable municipal, provincial, federal, and international legislation.
- Maintain compliance with Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration (CVOR), National Safety Code (NSC), Transport Canada, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FMCSA, customs regulations, and all other applicable transportation requirements.
- Ensure all shipping documentation, customs paperwork, export documentation, permits, and transportation records are complete, accurate, and retained in accordance with legislative and Company requirements.
- Maintain transportation documentation to support product traceability, customer requirements, and product recall procedures.
- Ensure driver qualification files, licences, medical examinations, training records, and annual driver abstracts remain current.
- Ensure third-party transportation providers maintain appropriate insurance, licensing, food safety standards, and regulatory compliance before providing services.
- Monitor legislative changes affecting transportation and implement operational changes as required.
- Support internal audits, customer audits, regulatory inspections, and social compliance audits.
- Investigate transportation incidents, customer complaints, accidents, near misses, and regulatory non-conformances, implementing corrective and preventative actions where required.
- Ensure compliance with all Company policies, including the Driver Code of Conduct, Fleet Safety Program, Health & Safety Program, Food Safety Program, and Standard Operating Procedures.
Food Safety & Quality
- Ensure transportation activities comply with Company Food Safety, HACCP, GMP, Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), customer, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure temperature-controlled shipments are maintained throughout transportation and distribution.
- Support product traceability, food safety investigations, and product recall activities.
- Work collaboratively with the Quality Assurance Department to resolve transportation-related quality concerns.
- Ensure transportation equipment is maintained in sanitary condition and suitable for food transportation.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage the departmental operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor transportation expenses, including freight, fuel, maintenance, repairs, equipment, leasing, and third-party carrier costs.
- Approve transportation-related expenditures within delegated authority.
- Review and approve freight invoices for accuracy prior to payment.
- Negotiate freight rates, transportation agreements, and service contracts.
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives while maintaining service levels and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare departmental reports and provide regular performance updates to senior leadership.
Performance Management & Continuous Improvement
- Develop, monitor, and report on departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
- On-time delivery performance
- Freight cost per shipment
- Fleet utilization
- Fuel efficiency
- Equipment downtime
- Transportation claims
- Driver performance
- Customer service performance
- Regulatory compliance
- Analyze transportation and operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead transportation improvement initiatives, including route optimization, load optimization, scheduling efficiencies, and process improvements.
- Support the implementation and optimization of Transportation Management Systems (TMS), GPS tracking, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), ERP systems, and other transportation technologies.
- Participate in strategic planning and support business growth, acquisitions, facility expansions, and logistics integration projects.
Risk Management & Business Continuity
- Identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks related to transportation and logistics.
- Develop and maintain emergency response and business continuity plans for transportation disruptions, including severe weather, border closures, equipment failures, labour disruptions, and other unforeseen events.
- Coordinate transportation-related insurance claims, cargo claims, and incident investigations.
- Protect Company assets by implementing effective risk management strategies and ensuring operational continuity.
Environmental & Sustainability
- Promote environmentally responsible transportation practices throughout the supply chain.
- Identify opportunities to reduce fuel consumption, improve route efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Support Company sustainability initiatives through responsible fleet management and transportation planning.
- Ensure regulated materials are transported and handled in accordance with applicable environmental legislation.
Authority & Decision-Making
Within the scope of Company policies, approved budgets, and delegated authority, the Logistics
Manager is authorized to:
Operational Authority
- Develop and adjust transportation schedules and routing plans.
- Assign transportation resources, routes, and workloads to meet operational and customer requirements.
- Select and manage approved transportation providers and freight carriers.
- Make operational decisions during transportation disruptions to minimize customer impact and maintain business continuity.
Financial Authority
- Approve routine transportation-related expenditures within delegated authority.
- Review and approve freight invoices.
- Negotiate freight rates, carrier agreements, and transportation service contracts.
- Recommend departmental operating budgets, capital expenditures, fleet replacement plans, and transportation improvement initiatives.
Leadership Authority
- Supervise, assign, and evaluate transportation employees.
- Recruit, interview, and recommend candidates for employment.
- Approve employee schedules, vacation requests, and overtime requirements.
- Recommend disciplinary action, promotions, and terminations in accordance with Company policies and Human Resources procedures.
Compliance Authority
- Remove vehicles or equipment from service when safety or regulatory requirements are not met.
- Suspend the use of third-party carriers that fail to meet Company or regulatory standards.
- Initiate corrective and preventative actions following transportation incidents, audit findings, customer complaints, or regulatory non-conformances.
- Recommend revisions to transportation policies, procedures, and operating practices to improve compliance and operational performance.
Continuous Improvement
- Lead transportation improvement initiatives and cross-functional projects.
- Recommend investments in transportation technology, fleet equipment, and process improvements.
- Develop departmental performance metrics and reporting tools to support operational excellence.
Accountability
The Logistics Manager is accountable for:
- Maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant transportation operations.

- Ensuring compliance with all transportation, customs, food safety, environmental, and health & safety requirements.

- Building positive relationships with customers, suppliers, fishermen, carriers, and regulatory agencies.
- Identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen transportation performance.
- Protecting Company assets while supporting the Company's strategic objectives and long-term growth.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Post-secondary education in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain management.
- Previous leadership experience managing transportation personnel and third-party carriers.
- Experience within a food manufacturing, food processing, distribution, or related environment is considered an asset.
- Experience managing domestic and international transportation, customs documentation, and export logistics.
Knowledge & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of Canadian and U.S. transportation legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of fleet management, preventative maintenance programs, and transportation safety.
- Understanding of HACCP, GMP, SFCR, and food manufacturing requirements.
- Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with ERP systems, Transportation Management Systems (TMS), GPS tracking, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), and fleet management software is considered an asset.

Pay: $90,000.00-$110,000.00 per year
