Full job description

Working with the Town of Newmarket’s Recreation and Culture Team, means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Working in Recreation means the start of something special, gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills.

This posting is specifically for instructors in niche and specialized sports disciplines (e.g., Archery, Fencing, and other unique program areas) that require a higher level of unique technical knowledge and experience. This role is not intended for traditional or commonly offered sports such as basketball, soccer, or volleyball.

We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with others with a passion to deliver high quality programs, events and services. One thing is for certain, you will love the experience and our participants will too!

The Successful Candidate Will:

1. Lead niche and specialized sports programs such as Archery, Fencing, and other unique disciplines requiring specific expertise.

2. Greet participants and ensures attendance is taken at each class and all paperwork is handed in promptly on the last day of the session.

3. Develop and deliver a curriculum in an engaging, inclusive and safe manner.

4. Use excellent customer service skills to resolve conflicts or concerns from program participants and the public, or refer to the appropriate staff.

5. Set up and tear down of all equipment. Reports any facility or equipment requests or concerns.

6. Communicate any issues with respect to health and safety concerns, attendance, participants, equipment, inventory, facility spaces.

7. Respond to emergency situations including performing minor first aid and/or arranging for medical assistance.

8. Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines and corporate objectives.

Job Requirements

All
1. Be an advocate for play and the importance of physical activity for all ages to develop motor, social and cognitive skills in participants.
2. Excellent customer service, communication, leadership, and organizational skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons, parents, and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
3. Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification required.
4. Current High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development and High Five Sport certifications required (Preschool-Youth classes).
5. Be available to work flexible hours including daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays.
6. Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.

Specialized 1 – Starting at $25
1. Three to five years’ experience instructing/coaching in the specialized sport.

Specialized 2 – Starting at $30
1. 5+ years experience instructing/coaching in the specialized sport.
2. Additional credentials or attendance in workshops in specific sport discipline.

Please Note:
1. Rate of pay will be determined by Town of Newmarket staff based on applicant experience and/or program requirements.

2. Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.

Disclaimer: Candidates whose Standard First Aid certification expires after June 22, 2026 must renew their certification through a WSIB-approved provider and obtain the new Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C certification at candidates own cost.
